You pushed the heavy wooden door open and, bracing yourself, you opened the next one. The room and everything in it were just as you'd left it except for the fire which had now burned out.
'Not much blood here,' Shizuku pointed out as she looked around. She nudged Blinky's muzzle against the body close to the table, and you watched in horrified fascination as it smoothly got sucked inside.
'Er, I think most of it was from the people he killed before he got here,' you explained, and she nodded, it made sense.
'Besides, I did most of this,' you confessed, nodding to the body in the chair. Remembering his teary eyes and pleads made you feel a bit sick, still, you could not deny that you'd done it. Broke his bones, tortured him. And it had not been that hard... the knot in your stomach tightened again as you thought about it.
Shizuku gave you a curious look as she poked the body,
'Broken bones, huh? I like it. Nice and clean. Not messy like the guys,' she said approvingly. 'They always leave blood and torn off limbs all over and then expect me to clean it up. Even Machi tends to get carried away sometimes.' She frowned at the slashed throat. 'That's Feitan's handiwork, I can tell. Efficient, but messy.'
She aimed Blinky towards the last body and its long tongue lolled out in what looked like anticipation of a treat.
'It's good that you and Fei have some common interests. Nobody expected him to find a girlfriend, like ever, and you're even the perfect height for him.' She looked you up and down, 'Or perfect short. Whatever. Anyway, it's nice with another girl around. We should have a girls' night out someday, you, me, and Machi.'
'Eh, thanks, that would be fun,' you said, giving her and Blinky a small smile. You couldn't argue about the height thing, but her quick assumption of you both being Feitan's girlfriend and having an interest in torture made you feel a bit odd. Not to mention how relaxed this seemingly sweet girl was when it came to disposing of dead, mutilated bodies...
'So he doesn't bring girls here often then?' you asked, cursing inwardly as you let the words slip. Why did you ask that?
She gave you a surprised look.
'Oh no, he doesn't. Not that any of them would bring anyone here to the hideout anyway, not unless they planned to kill them afterward. This place is supposed to be secret after all. But I think he and Phinks usually just pay for company when they feel like it. There are a few brothels all the guys go to on occasion.'
'I see,' you mumbled. You just had to ask, didn't you?
'Shal's had a few longer relationships, Nobu too, but Feitan...well he is...Feitan,' she shrugged as if that explained everything. She looked around the room one last time to make sure she had not missed anything.
'Ok, I think we're done here.' She sent Blinky away again. 'Let's go back upstairs and see what the others are doing.'

Later in the evening, when you were heading down to the kitchen for dinner, Feitan caught you in the hallway, and without saying anything he handed you a small bag made out of soft black fabric, watching almost nervously as you opened it. You gasped as you peered at the content. Out of the bag slid a golden bracelet, sparkling with white and red gemstones. Why on earth was he giving you something like this? It was, you supposed, gorgeous in its own very, very exaggerated, and above all, shiny, way, and you looked questioningly at him.
'Rent, for apartment,' he explained.
Ah, that was a relief, for a moment you'd thought it was some weird courtship gift. You stared at the bracelet. There was no doubt that it was real, and worth several years of house rent, if not more. It was such a sweet, thoughtful, yet so hopelessly impractical gesture that you couldn't help but laugh quietly, and Feitan was looking uncertainly between your face and the bracelet in your hand.
