You left the office you had arrived in and headed down a dimly lit corridor, turned around a corner, and saw the rest of the group gathered next to the elevators. Phinks was in the process of prying the door open, and by the time you reached them, the shaft was open. Shalnark curiously peeked inside,
'Good, there are ladders, so we don't need to use the wires to climb. If the smell is anything to go by, they're fairly greasy.' He jumped inside, clinging to the ladder on the other side. 'So, we'll just need to go six floors up.'
Phinks and Shizuku quickly followed him, and Illumi was about to go after them when you asked,
'Any news about Kalluto?'
He paused and turned those dark hypnotic eyes to you,
'Not yet, but they've barely made it back home yet. I do not expect an update for several days.'
'Okay. I'm sorry. You must be so worried.'
His face took on a puzzled expression and he gave a small shrug before he answered.
'Worried? Assassins don't worry. They will let me know when there's any change. If it's important to you I can pass on any relevant information.'
'Thank you, I'd appreciate it,' you said, giving up trying to understand his reasoning when it came to emotions.
'Coming?' Phinks's voice echoed from the open door and the three of you quickly followed the others up and you soon found yourselves in another shadowy hallway.
Doors were evenly spaced on both sides of it, most of them closed and presumably locked, while some were wide open, giving you glimpses of dark offices. Carefully, zetsu activated, you made your way down the main hallway.
'Hm, for a second there I thought I saw Hisoka,' Shizuku said stopping suddenly, narrowing her eyes as she looked down the shorter corridor leading off to your left, 'I doubt anybody else has that hair and outfit. You're certain he didn't sneak in with you?'
'Of course,' Illumi answered, looking surprised. 'While he is a hunter too, and easily could make his way this high up in the building, I have absolutely forbidden him to do so today. I was very clear when I told him that he was not allowed to interfere with our assignment.'
You groaned on the inside. Forbidding Hisoka to do something would almost certainly guarantee him doing exactly that, especially if it involved something he would consider "fun". How could Illumi not know this? Sighing you sharpened your senses even more, though you knew there was very little chance of you detecting him if he didn't want you to. While you didn't hold any grudge against the clown, you also had absolutely no desire to see him again. Especially not here and now, with Fei and the others, in the midst of your first real mission for the Troupe. Still, if he really was here he was almost certainly going to complicate things.
'Wait,' this time it was Feitan who stopped in front of a door, trying the handle. It was locked but he held the handle down and gave it a good shove to break it open. The sound echoed through the deserted hallways causing everybody to tense and look around, but it seemed you had not attracted any attention. As you stepped through the door you noticed the tiny sign next to the door frame "Lab. Restricted Access".
Despite the sign, the spacious room did not look anything like a lab. One of the walls was covered with mainframe computers and a number of huge desks held some smaller terminals and screens. It smelled slightly like disinfectant and the temperature in the room was a few degrees lower than the rest of the building, making you shiver slightly. There was, however, a massive metal door that any bank would have been proud to have to protect its vault and treasure, and Phinks and Feitan immediately gravitated to it.
