When your vision slowly came back and the ringing in your ears started to subside, you found yourself lying on your side in a puddle of something cold and sticky, your hands tightly bound in front of you, and your face close to a mass of pink hair. Disgusted you realized that you must be lying in the pool of blood from the first group that had tried to ambush you, and your skin tried to shrink away from the sticky liquid.

A quick look around told you that Shizuku was lying in front of Machi and a small group of people was standing nearby, one of them talking on the phone while the others watched her, listening in on the conversation. You poked Machi's back,

'You awake?' you whispered and she stirred a bit.

'Yeah. Shizu too.' That was a relief, everybody was okay.

'I guess we found our targets,' you said ironically and Machi chuckled.

'Yeah, we're pretty lucky actually.'

'Lucky?'

'There's only five of them.'

There was some squirming, then she swore quietly.

'Fuck. Can you use nen?'

What did she mean? Of course you could. You started focusing your aura only to feel it slip away from your mind, as elusive and untouchable as mist. It was frustrating, infuriating, and...frightening.

'No,' you whispered back. 'What did they do to us?'

This was not good, not good at all. Without nen your chance of beating five Hunters in a fight was slim at best. More like nonexistent. You swore as well.

To make matters worse, the woman had finished her phone call and now the sound of determined footsteps was getting close. The three of you were roughly yanked up on your feet and you looked up at the man holding a tight grip on your arm. A rather handsome face, surrounded by dark curly hair.

'Well, hello again sweetheart,' he said making sure you recognized him. It was the same man who had returned the dart to you, but now there was no trace of drunkenness neither in his speech nor his demeanor.

'I still think we should just kill them here and now,' one of the men said, but two of the others objected.

'That's not our order. For now, they're more valuable as bait to lure the rest of them out.'

Great, being bait once more. You really felt you'd had enough of that for one evening.

'We're not going anywhere with you,' Machi said, shaking her arm free and you envied the confidence you could hear in her voice.

'Aw, it's so sweet that you think that you actually have a choice,' a sturdy middle-aged man with short, almost white hair said, giving her a patronizing smile that was returned with a cold glare.

'Just because you did alright with those losers,' clearly unimpressed he nodded to the dead bodies, 'does not mean that you have any chance against us.'

'If you say so.'

Without warning she aimed a quick kick at his knee, then when he leaned forward her other foot hit him in the groin, hard. He sank down to his knees with a groan while Machi leaped onto his back, put her bound arms over his head, leaning back, strangling him. He tried to shake her off but to no avail and you could see his eyes starting to roll up when the woman who had been on the phone before stepped up to them. She raised an arm and a bolt of electricity shot into Machi who spasmed a few times, then hung limp against the man's back.

'Tch, tch,' she shook her head at the man, 'What were you thinking? That was pathetic.'

Furious he lifted Machi off him and set her down on the ground in front of him. Her legs were still trembling from the shock, her eyes unfocused as she stared at him even as he slapped her hard across the face, hard enough to send her skidding all the way back against the wall.
