~ * ~
Tapping your fingers impatiently on the wall you kept your eyes fixed on the staircase leading down from the game's entry room. It hadn't been even ten minutes since Fei had left you, reluctantly and muttering, and you knew it'd be at least as long before Kallu and Illumi would get here. Fei, of course, had wanted to be the one to stay behind, but Chrollo's orders had been clear. You should be the one staying in case there would be a need for additional healing, and you agreed. Since the Troupe still only had three game rings, this really was the best solution.
Chewing nervously on a fingernail you scanned your surroundings, as far as you could tell you were alone. Not that it was the idea of a possible attack that made you nervous, it wasn't. Instead, your mind kept making up scenarios in which your plan wouldn't work, that something would go gruesomely wrong...that Kallu would never wake up, that he'd...
You were on your third nail when you finally heard the door open and close somewhere above you, followed by soft footsteps coming down the stairs. It felt like a small eternity before Kalluto came into view, one hand trailing along the wall as he slowly walked down the stairs.
'Kallu,' you called but he didn't respond, his eyes staring straight ahead and your stomach clenched when you saw several small pin heads sticking out from his forehead.
He stopped and his head turned your way, his eyes flickering, completely unfocused.
'I have been here before. I do not require any additional information,' he said in a monotonous barely recognizable voice.
He looked away from you and continued walking down, one slow step at a time. As he walked past you, you reached out to catch his arm, and he stopped once more, aura flaring as he shielded up, again repeating, 'I have been here before. I do not require any additional information,' in the same strange voice.
Frowning you let go of his arm and he made no attempt to leave but remained standing next to you, his still flickering eyes staring unseeing out over the horizon. You didn't know what you had expected him to be like when he showed up but seeing him like this was breaking your heart, and you fervently hoped that your plan would work.
Suddenly he stood up straighter, his eyes stopped flickering, and he looked straight at you.
'I have arrived successfully and will join you shortly,' he said, his voice much stronger than before, and while it still was unnerving you sighed with relief. Illumi must have entered the game.
'Any problems?' you asked as he came down the stairs and put a hand on his brother's shoulder.
'None. Where shall we do this?'
'Here is as good as anywhere I guess,' you said, pointing to a spot next to some shrubs close by, and he nodded.
'Does it hurt? The pins I mean...can he feel them?' You asked looking at Kalluto again as Illumi had him lie down on his back on the grass. He looked so peaceful. As if he was just taking a nap. A very long nap.
'Hurt? No, there should be no pain,' Illumi said, seemingly puzzled by the question. He knelt down and carefully removed all the pins from his brother's head.
'Couldn't I have done that?' You nodded at the pins in his hand, but he shook his head and rather carefully put both them and a small black device into his pocket.
'No, not without causing permanent damage. Or killing him.'
That made sense you supposed. If anyone could just pull them out the technique wouldn't be nearly as efficient. Or as frightening.
'You ready?' You asked, meeting his eyes. Even when he was sitting on his knees like this, they were almost level with yours.
'Yes. We should get started. How does it work?'
