As we swam, Adella and I talked, getting to know each other better. She explained that pureblooded mermaids only have to live among humans until they're thirteen. Halfbreeds, however, must wait longer because something about their bodies can't acclimate to the water until they're twenty-one. I expressed how frustrating that was, but she continued telling me that in almost every case, the mermaid parents, or in a case like mine, parent, would live with the offspring until they could return to the sea. "Many mermaids choose to live among the humans, never returning to the sea. Either because they have to due to obligation or because of love." I nodded,
"You said mermaids can mate with humans, too, so that makes sense," I replied. Adella smiled at me, then looked above us; I followed her gaze and saw a giant shark swimming over us.
I wanted to swim more profoundly, but Adella stayed put, calling out to the shark. "Hey, Edweana!" She called. In an eruption of bubbles, before us was another mermaid, but she had a dorsal fin and was a gray color.
"Adella!" She said, swimming toward us, "It's been too long!" She then noticed me, "Hi, I'm Edweana." I waved to her,
"Caspia," I replied; her eyes widened,
"Are you the daughter of Queen Marina?" I rubbed the back of my neck nervously,
"Yes." Edweana bowed her head to me,
"You must be the reason her majesty has called an emergency meeting of the elders." She told us, but we both stared at her curiously, "Do you two not know?" She asked,
"Know what?" Adella asked, "We just escaped Caspia's father's ship a day ago now, I think." I nod,
"Your mother sent a messenger to the elders." Edweana told us, "Said it was an emergency concerning the humans. I'm assuming that it's to tell us that you've returned to us to be our princess." I looked to Adella, concerned,
"We need to hurry," I told her. Adella nods, and the three of us begin swimming as fast as our tails can.
If it was about me, I don't think it would be considered an emergency; if anything, perhaps a grand announcement with a celebration, but an emergency meeting of the elders? No. Something was wrong, and I needed to know what. I just hope it isn't what I'm fearing.
A war.
