"Your majesty?" Lady Shinobu looked up and saw a servant of the palace.
"Yes? Is there something I ought to know?" It had been a few days since she was wed to King Tomioka. She was taking management of a few documents, in which needed to be signed.
"Well, his majesty declared that perhaps you need to choose ladies in waiting now. After all, it is quite late, but many have offered to be in that position."
"Ah yes," Shinobu spoke, "then I shall begin my decisions. Please, for the sake of time, would you call Aoi-san in?"
"Of course, your majesty." As expected, the servant left her sight and returned merely a brisk minute later with the young maid. Therefore, her work was done, so the servant left.
"You called for me, Queen Shinobu?"
Lady Shinobu chuckled lightly, "Oh no, I don't fancy you call me that just yet. I am still merely a noblewoman, not a queen."
Aoi laughed, "If you wish, my lady. Now, let us get to our point. Is there a particular reason you desired my presence?"
"Yes, in fact. Do you recall the day I was preparing for my wedding? Well, if you perhaps remember clearly, I offered you to help in the decision of which shall act in place as my ladies-in-waiting." Lady Shinobu explained.
"Ah, yes. Then shall I bring the list in?"
"That would be great."
Aoi called in a few other maids who were placed under her management. A few animated seconds passed. Soon, the others arrived with the list.
"Thanks." Aoi briskly gave her thanks to Terauchi Kiyo, another maid who came from the Kibutsuji estate, and sent her away.
The maid then handed the file to Lady Shinobu, who unfolded the paper.
"It is written on this document, all the noble ladies in the kingdom whom wish to become your lady-in-waiting." Aoi brusquely explained.
"Yes, I do see that." Shinobu ran her fingers along all the names, in high hopes of seeing Lady Kanae's title.
As the lady went through the list of names, she was invariably seeking Aoi's advice, as she knew that, even though her father was in a great position in high society and she herself would be raised to a higher status as queen, her maid had more socializing moments than she'd ever experienced.
"I do recommend Nezuko-sama," Aoi stated, pointing to the name of Lady Nezuko, "She does have quite an amiable and good-natured charisma."
"Hm, that would be quite nice..."
A few hours went by in discussion. It looked much simpler than done. Finally, with the guidance of Aoi, Lady Shinobu was able to settle on her first two ladies-in-waiting: Lady Nezuko and Lady Mitsuri.
"I see. That will do for now, though you ought to choose perhaps one more, but we shall wait to do that. For now, my lady, you shall go to coronation rehearsals."
Lady Shinobu sighed. Though she knew she ought to be crowned, she felt as if she was unworthy of the crown. Countless callous rumors were formed by young women who have taken an interest in the new king. Those claimed that Shinobu was only using the throne to her own benefit, in other words, to execute all whom get in her way.
As much as she attempted to ignore the false chatter, nothing could ever shake away the cold feeling she had.
Oh, how strange of me. Many noblewomen in this kingdom all desire the crown, yet here I stand, despising my coronation. Lady Shinobu shook away all her thoughts. She ought to be ready for rehearsing.
