By the time Cassie had to leave for class, she went to her usual meet up spot to find Quana. This time, Quana was early and Cassie walked up to her.
"Wow, you're actually here before me."
Quana didn't respond to that. "Cassie, I need to tell you something really important. It's about that guy who's staying at your place."
Caasie's brow furrowed. "What about him?"
"It must be fate or something 'cause right after I left your place yesterday, I ran into this guy who apparently knows him." From her phone, Cassie was shown a picture of what appeared to be a human taking a picture with Levi.
The human in question had white hair and his eyes almost matched. That was nearly the only thing that stood out about him, so maybe he was just a human? If he did know Levi, why not just find him instead of going to Quana?
"Hey, are you listening?"
"Yeah, what did this guy want?"
"He didn't really want anything. He just wanted to be sure he knew where that guy was, I think he said his name was Levi?"
"Did he say how he knew him?"
"He just said they knew each other."
While Cassie couldn't think very much about it, she felt weary at the stranger. Maybe he really did know Levi and was his friend, but that didn't make sense about why he wouldn't just call him instead of taking this method.
"For now…" Cassie stopped prematurely.
She realized she was more concerned about Levi being hurt by the stranger than any general concern she could have had over him.
Her head shook. "Why'd you talk to him anyways? He could have been some creeper."
"A creeper who’s a friend of your roommate." Quana and her started walking down the hallway like always. "Anyways, he came up to me and said he knew you both. He told me exactly what Levi looked like so I assumed he was a friend."
"He did?" Cassie knew her worries could only be voiced to herself. Whoever the individual was, Cassie only grew more skeptical at his involvement with Levi.
"Speaking of that, I didn't want to be rude in front of the guy, but what was up with that reaction yesterday?"
"Oh, he thought you were cute."
"Well duh, but why react like that if he thinks I'm cute?"
"I don't know, I pretty much just met the guy."
"Then, what you told me applies to you too."
Cassie nodded, understanding the sentiment they both shared at the moment. It seemed to calm Cassie that they both felt similarly—about being wary of strangers—but she couldn't shake the strange feeling she had, one that didn’t seem to bother Quana as much.
It was almost like the image of Levi and the stranger was alive and the person inside wasn't just a still image, but a person she could run into at any second. If Levi knew this person, did that mean he wasn’t a human?
That fleeting thought faded when she heard Quana let out a slight gasp.
She was frantically digging through her purse. "No way, did I lose it?"
"Lose what?"
"My bracelet! You know the one with my name on it?"
"Yeah, you always wear it. Maybe you just misplaced it?"
"I better, I can't live without her!" Quana sighed and brushed her hair back. "I'm probably just losing my mind because of this end of the semester stuff."
"Hey, we're all like that, we got a week left before the semester ends and we can unwind then." Cassie went on. "But, I remember seeing the bracelet when you came over yesterday.”
"Ugh, I can't remember when I went home if I had it or not." She then huffed. "Fine, I'm just gonna have to check your place."
Quana turned on her heel to leave the building.
"Right now?"
"Yes, right now. I can't even imagine how scared she must be without me." Quana seemed to be talking to herself.
"We're gonna be late to class."
"Both these classes are done for the semester, I'm only here because you're here and you know it."
Seeing her point, Cassie followed Quana out and back to her apartment…
When they got back, as soon as Cassie opened the door, Quana stormed in. Cassie hadn’t seen Levi on her couch, but he at least had to be somewhere: after all, the weren't very many places to hide.
She was going to check when Quana grabbed her hand and brought her to the couch.
“That guy couldn't have stolen it could he?”
“I doubt it. Why would he want your bracelet?”
“To pawn it. That’s real silver, a real diamond and a real topaz.”
Every fiber of Cassie’s being wanted to tell Quana the real reason she felt like Levi wouldn’t care about human world materials, but she gave a soft shrug instead.
“Then where do you think it could be? It’s not a very big apartment.”
Quana went through her steps. “I was only sitting on the couch.” Going over, Quana lifted the pillows and started to pull out the cushions.
In an attempt to keep things orderly, Cassie was behind Quana placing the pillows and cushions down beside each other. Quana stuck her through the bottom sides of the couch and dug around desperately. When she didn’t find anything, she got to her feet and started to anxiously run her hands through her hair.
“Hey, come on, we’ll find it okay?” Cassie tried to comfort her friend.
“Like you said, this place is tiny. If it’s not in plain sight, then it’s probably not here.” Quana’s voice shook.
“Quana…”
Cassie was somewhat at a loss, however, she quickly moved to check the TV stand—on and behind it—before going over to the shelf in the room and moving the books around.
“It’s not gonna be there.” Quana almost sounded defeated.
“We gotta be sure and if it’s not here, we can go and retrace your steps from last night.” While Cassie searched, neither one of them noticed the faint light coming from behind them.
They only turned around when it blinded them from behind, not even seeing it, the pair closed their eyes, covered their faces with their arms, and soon heard someone’s voice.
“I didn’t mean to make you upset. Who would have thought that little bracelet would cause such an emotion.”
Slowly, the light faded and Quana’s mouth fell open. She pointed at him and said, “it’s you!”
In front of them was the very person they saw in the photo with Levi. Unable to discern where he came from, the pair watched with astonishment washing over them.
It was at this very moment that Cassie wondered where Levi was and why this person was in her home.
