Bryndis just received the dreaded news she thought she would never hear. Her uncle entered into a betrothal contract with one of his generals. After her parents died in battle, she was sent to her uncle Sven's house from her father's side. When his wife died shortly after she arrived, Sven sent her to the castle. The queen was friends with Bryndis's parents and took her in. She was raised with Queen Frigga's sons. Only a select few knew of her involvement with Loki, Frigga's son. Their relationship grew a few months ago. The attraction was there for years but they finally confessed their feelings to each other just recently.

She was past the acceptable marriage age so she never thought this would happen. Loki had gone with Thor on a diplomatic meeting to another realm so she couldn't even talk to him. Feeling alone, Bryndis ran to the library for solace. She paced the room thinking of what to do next. How to tell Loki or how to get out of this contract.  With no one to talk to, she headed to Loki's bedroom. To lay on his bed for comfort. His pillow would smell like him. Maybe wrap herself in one of his shirts to comfort her until he returned.

Running to the door, she thought she heard voices. No one was allowed in Loki's room especially when he was off world. Of course, Bryndis was the exception.

When she pushed open the door, the voices were louder, so she passed the sitting area and walked into the actual bedroom. What she saw made her stomach turn. Loki and her friend Tove were in bed together. Bryndis stood there in shock, holding onto the door frame so she wouldn't faint. Tove looked up at her and smiled. Bryndis could only see Loki's back, kissing her neck just like he did to her just last night. His arm raised, caressing her face. Bryndis turned and ran out of the room, down the hall. Blindly running as the tears streamed down her face. This was the worse day of her life. She lost her freedom and her love in a matter of minutes. Running to the gardens, she threw herself on a bench and cried.

"Bryndis?" she heard a soft voice behind her. She looked up to find the queen standing there, concern on her face. "Are you alright?"

She shook her head. Bryndis couldn't find the words so she just sent her thoughts to the queen. Both had magic and this was the easiest way to communicate for Bryndis when she couldn't find the appropriate words to express herself.

"Oh sweetheart, what can I do?" Frigga hugged Bryndis.

She took a deep breath to calm herself. "Help me get away. I need to leave."

"Where would you go child?" Frigga asked.

"I don't care. I need to get away from here. I can't marry and now my future with Loki is gone so I need to start anew." Bryndis wiped the tears from her eyes. More determined than ever, she was leaving the castle with or without help. She would leave Asgard and find another realm to live in, if necessary, but she was never going to marry anyone.

Frigga saw the determination in her eyes. She nodded. "Get ready, I'm leaving to visit my sister, Ria, so I can take you there until you decide where you want to go."

They arrived at Vanaheim the next day. Bryndis barely slept not wanting to close her eyes. Everytime she would, she would see Tove and Loki together. She felt her heart break even more.

The queen's sister had taken ill recently. The healers couldn't figure out what was wrong with Ria.  Bryndis tried to heal her but whenever she fixed one problem, another one would appear. She felt like she was doing more harm than good.

Bryndis was like a daughter to Frigga and it hurt her to see Bryndis suffering so. For the past week, she barely ate and from the dark circles under her eyes, she barely slept.  "Bryndis, have you reached out to Loki since we left?"

She shook her head. "I can't. To hear his lies. I just want to disappear. Far from here."

"I think I can help. I can send you someplace safe," Frigga suggested. Thor always spoke highly of his Midgardian friends. When the time was right, she and Loki would find each other again.
