Hunger

CHAPTER 15

Bella

We followed the growls into the woods. I recognized Jacob's fur right away so I knew which one not to kill.

Edward let out a mind-numbing growl and flew at a wolf crouched over something. I watched as he wrestled it away, dragging it deeper into the woods.

"Rene-" I choked off, panic flushing through me. "Oh God!"

I was mortified and if I was still human I would have died from a heart attack.

Wolves snarled to the left of me, but my vision tunneled to my mauled daughter lying bleeding and unconscious on the cold dirt ground of the forest.

Edward's voice broke through my daze. "Bella!"

He slammed into me, us falling to the ground in the process. A giant wolf jumped over our heads and I blinked astonished.

Edward jumped off of me and attacked the wolf. I got up and bounded in one jump to Renesmee's side.

She lied there unmoving. The light but beautiful blush that used to make her face glow was. She was a pale lifeless figure.

I turned as I heard a bone-tingling sound. It sounded like someone taking a knife and dragging it across a piece of glass. The wind knocked out of me when I saw who it was.

Edward, missing three fingers, fell to his knees clutching his hand in agony.

"Edward!" I screamed, torn whether to help the love of my existence or my daughter.

My eyes flitted to Jacob who was wrestling with three different werewolves. Two were circling Edward. It was 5 against 2. We were outnumbered.

I tried to think of what to do. We needed back up, but I couldn't run for help and just leave my daughter and my Edward.

Then it hit me.

"Billy! Help! Call the Cullen's!" I yelled so loud I knew he could hear me.

"I can't Bella!" he called back. "I can't get back up the basement stairs!"

Another agonizing screeching sounded behind me and I saw another chunk of Edward go flying.

I didn't have a choice. I had to call them.

"I'll be back Renesmee. Hold on baby." I whispered, getting up and flying into the house.

The phone was dialed and to my ear in less than a second.

"Hello?"

"Rose! Get everyone to Jacob's house right now!"

"We can't. The treaty-"

"Is broken. Edward and I are already here."

"What? Why?"

"The werewolves are attacking each other. One already..." I couldn't say it.

"One already what Bella?"

"Renesmee's hurt really badly. We're out numbered. Please help."

I hung up and raced back outside.

I froze mid-step as two werewolves on either side of Jacob attacked him.

To my horror I watched my best friend's left leg and right hand get torn off before he crashed to the ground lifelessly. Before I could even move, another werewolf lunged and bit into his neck, followed by a sickening snap.
