It was a typical Tuesday evening, Maria was home alone. Again. She wasn't really sure why she bothered anymore, maybe it was the last glimmer of hope left in her? She wasn't really sure, she sighed as she looked at the clock opposite the small dining room table. It was 10 past 10, the food had long been cold. Her stubbornness forced her to sit there for another thirty minutes before eventually giving up. Why couldn't Natasha just prioritise her for once? What had gone wrong? She bit her tongue, there was no point in wasting her anger. She was used to it by now. Her wife just had more important things to do.

She turned the dim dinning room light off, carrying Natasha's plate into the kitchen to wrap it up securely before placing it in the oven for Natasha to warm up when she got home. She wasn't cruel, she wouldn't let her starve. Natasha didn't know the first thing about cooking, she once set the kitchen on fire trying to make toast. Maria missed the days when the kitchen felt alive, when she'd make her grandma's famous lasagne and Natasha would sit on the counter swinging her legs back and forth like a child to keep her company. She missed when Natasha would talk to her for hours about anything and everything, Maria would always listen intently taking in every detail. Always admiring Natasha's enthusiasm. These days, she just felt alone.

Maria continued to listen to the agonising ticking of the clock, it was grating on her. It swung back and forth, back and forth. Reminding her every second that her wife wasn't home. Her whole body began to itch with anger, she placed her hands onto the countertop so she could stretch her back after sitting alone for so long. She ended up resting her head on the counter in a awkward half stood, half bent position trying to focus on her breathing. She took a deep breath, this isn't what she signed up for when she took her vows. She loved Natasha, wholeheartedly, but this didn't feel like love. She didn't feel respected. Natasha was always late home, out in god knows where doing god knows what. The ring on Maria's finger had grown heavy the last few months, a reminder that she was married to a woman who couldn't even be bothered to see her before bed every night. Natasha was always gone first thing in the morning when Maria woke up and she always snook in at night when Maria had already fallen asleep. If Maria didn't notice the laundry pile growing she'd think that she lived alone.

"Fuck" she muttered under her breath, standing on her tip toes to grab the Russian Vodka off the top shelf. She's hidden it away from Natasha a while ago, sick of her lazy drinking. Natasha was smaller than her, so hiding things in high places always worked. Unless Nat felt like climbing onto the counter tops.

"Screw it" she flipped the bottle cap off, pouring the liquid into a small glass. She stared at it for a minute, she knew she shouldn't. Before she had another second to second guess herself she grabbed both the glass and the bottle and poured the contents down the drain. She wouldn't turn into him. She was better than that.

Liho's hissing brought her out of her state, shit she forgot to feed her. Wasting all this time on Natasha she was now neglecting Natasha's cat. She wanted to scream, she was consumed by all things Natasha and yet her wife wasn't even there. "Sorry" she mumbled to the demon child, scraping some tuna into her bowl. Her night couldn't possibly get worse? Wrong. Upon walking to the rubbish bin to dispose of the tin she stubbed her toe on the corner of the cabinet. She began jumping up and down on one leg, holding other foot in her hand. If her recruits saw her like this they'd be horrified. When wasn't the 'Ice Queen' put together? Holy fucking shit it hurt though, it hurt more than the time Melinda May broke her wrist during a spar match.

"christ, Hill. Calm down" she spoke aloud, trying to reassure herself. She knew she wasn't happy and she knew things had to change. She turned the kitchen light off and walked into the living room, she grabbed her favourite hoodie ( Natasha's hoodie which was originally Maria's college hoodie before Natasha stole it) and slipped it over her vest top and sleep shorts. It was big on her, she giggled knowing how much bigger it was on Natasha. Her giggling was cut off swiftly as Natasha's scent consumed her, another reminder that her wife was not home. She might as well be dead.  Where was she? What was she doing? Those same two questions glared at Maria. Did she even want to know? There was a very fine line between being blissfully ignorant and brutally aware. Maria grabbed a blanket and draped it over herself, she always waited up for Natasha these days. The thought of going to bed alone was abhorrent, it made her feel well and truly forgotten. Liho soon joined her on the sofa not long after.

It had been another two hours until the tell tale signs of the keys being put into the door giggled, Maria's sleepy eyes widened. Nat was finally home. She glanced at the clock, 12: 30am.

"Babe, I'm sorry. I know it's late" Natasha shouted into the hallway, clearly knowing Maria would wait up for her. Did she not care? Maria didn't bother reply, choosing to wipe the sleep away from her eyes and take a good stretch and yawn instead. The sofa was awfully uncomfortable to sleep on. Natasha walked into the room confidently as if she'd done nothing wrong. How was she so blind?

"You said you'd be home by seven" Maria deadpanned, standing up. Natasha was almost six hours late. The  hoodie Hill wore was reaching her knees and her messy bed head and sleepy form made her look like a child and not the commander of SHIELD. She felt suddenly insecure, she loved wearing comfortable clothes, especially clothes that smelt like Nat,  with Natasha but she couldn't help but feel vulnerable. Feel small.

"I know, I was busy. I forgot." it was a lame excuse on Natasha's part, Hill deserved better than that. Natasha was surprised when Maria didn't say anything, usually they'd fight and one of them would end up sleeping on the sofa and wake up with terrible back ache.

"You're not angry?" Natasha asked abruptly, startled by her wife's silence.

"I wish I was angry" Maria sighed, folding the blanket up and placing it on the back of the sofa. She truly was defeated.

"What?" Natasha replied, clearly confused and apparently these last few moths she was emotionally immature and unable to read a room.

"Natasha, I wish I was angry because this would mean it was the first or maybe second time it'd happened." Maria's words sounded tired and broken, the exact same way she looked.

"Maria I-" Natasha started, Maria cut her off.

"It doesn't matter, dinner went cold hours ago. Yours is in the oven, if you're hungry. I'll see you in bed" her words were soft, she didn't have the energy to be angry. Natasha stood there awkwardly, shifting her weight from foot to foot. Maria didn't even bother look up at her, she brushed passed her with her sleepy eyes looking at the floor. Natasha heard Mia's footsteps slowly go up the stairs; she knew she was exhausted. Maria didn't even care if she was going to bed alone anymore.
