His mom frowned disapprovingly.
"You lucky." She said in broken English, exhaling slowly. "I might just—" She made the universal motion of 'you're dead'.
Lukas cleared his throat nervously.
"Oh, mom. Don't be like that. You're seriously scaring me."
His mom stared at him, unamused.
"Look, I know it's really late for me to be out. But! I was with a friend! You know Raven, right? He's been over... uhm, three times. For group projects. You know, my friend since second grade?" He blurted out.
His mom definitely had a way of staring at someone's soul, and making them explain everything without her saying anything more.
His mom hummed. "Yes. I know him."
"Great, so can you just let me go upstairs—"
His mom crossed her arms.
"Ah, ah, ah!"
Lukas immediately froze, hands glued to his sides.
"What you were doing at Raven's house?" She asked.
"Uh...."
Oh you know, gaming and laughing at stupid memes on the Internet with Raven. Having a little fight with him, hugging him, smelling him— wait, why am I thinking of that?! Now I'm being weird. Raven's definitely influencing ME.
Lukas smiled. "Just studying for school. Algebra, social studies, that kinda stuff. Just a simple hangout after school, where we utilize time to, uh, study, uh, important stuff!"
Mom would kill me if she caught me gaming and being on the Internet.
His mom raised an eyebrow. "Studying. Well, I... suppose that is good."
Lukas nodded with a huge, forced smile.
"You were really with Raven?" She asked.
"Yes." Lukas replied.
"And not fooling around on the streets?"
"Yes, mom." Lukas said, trying not to grit his teeth.
Was it THAT hard to believe him? Yeah, he lied about studying, but it was true he had been with Raven, in the safety of Raven's house.
"I cannot really believe you. This Raven boy, can I really trust?"
Lukas gritted his teeth, frustrated.
"Look, mom. I get that you don't trust easily, but seriously! Raven's my closest friend! Admittedly... my only friend. But! He's my friend and he's been since second grade till now! He's amazing, talented, funny, and—"
He has really cute puffed up cheeks when he stuffs his mouth with snacks— BUT THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT!
"—and he's a great friend. You know him, I've introduced you to him the three times he was over here!" Lukas said exasperated.
His mom exhaled harshly.
"I have met him briefly all three time. And I did not see him again after that. I cannot trust him like you can, when I have not met him much. How I know he is not shitty person?" She asked.
Lukas groaned. "What is so hard to trust? Can't you trust me? If I say Raven's great, then can't you trust that he's great? Dad would have—" He faltered. "... he would have... believed me."
Dad was the only one who could calm Mom's storm. I.... miss him.
His mother's eyes lit on fire. "Do not speak of your father. And do not use him like this."
"I'm sorry." Lukas bowed his head.
