Chapter 11

Veronica helped me up with a small sigh and whispered, "How much of that did you hear?"

I couldn't think of a lie fast enough so I just told the truth. "Most of it."

Veronica's mum sighed and placed her hand on my shoulder, "I'm not trying to kick you out with a cold-heart. I'm just worried I won't be able to look after you." Then she gave me a reassuring smile, "You can stay for a couple more days while I try to find somewhere for you to stay. Do you have any grandparents or aunts and uncles?"

"Um..." I narrowed my eyes. "My grandparents are all the way in Asia.. and I do have an aunt but I can't remember her at all. I only met her once when I was like 2.."

"Okay." Veronica's mum smiled softly. "I'll try to contact your mum and dad again and see If I can get hold of your aunt's number."

I nodded sadly and turned away and out of the office with Veronica leading me away.

"I am so sorry your parents left you." Veronica said. "They are heartless and mean and cruel and I will help you in any way I can."

"Thanks." I forced a smile at Veronica.

For once I was glad I had a friend.

We sat in Veronica's room, waiting anxiously for her mum to give us the news about her struggles to find someone to look after me.

I kept repeating in my head. She's gonna kick me out. She's gonna kick me out and I'll be on the streets. I'll be put in an adoption place...

Suddenly, Veronica's mother walked in and I tensed. I looked up at her and waited anxiously for the news.

"I can't get hold of anyone." She murmured sadly. "Your parents' phones are still on voicemail and I don't have any other numbers. Maybe we could-" then, her phone rang. She looked down at the screen and narrowed her eyes before answering. "Hello?"

"Um, yes this is Veronica's mother... You want to speak with Rain? Who is this?" She paused. "Mm, alright." Then she handed me the phone. "Here."

I took the phone and placed it by my ear nervously. Who wants to speak with me?

"Hello? Rain?" I let out a sigh of relief.

"Dani!" I squealed.

"Hi Rain. I'm sorry mum and dad left you like that. I meant to call Veronica's mum but I couldn't find her number. I'm gonna pick you up and take you to my place in a day or so."

I felt a hopeful smile reach my lips.
