The next day arrived and I waited anxiously for Dani to come.
I glanced at the clock.
11:56am
"Come on, Dani..." I whispered.
Veronica laid her her hand on my shoulder. "Dani will come, don't worry."
"Yeah." I tried to convince myself that there was nothing to worry about but I couldn't help but think that Dani had been lying. Had she also left with my parents?
Then, the doorbell rang. I leapt out of my seat and dashed towards the door, flinging it open. "Dan-" I was cut short when I realised it was a strange lady standing at the door. Her gaze lit up when she saw me.
"Hey, I know you. You're that girl from the Pizzeria about a year ago right?" The strange girl said with a gentle smile.
"Umm.." I shook my head just as Veronica came up behind me.
"Oh! Silly me, you lost your memory that day.. It was quite a nasty bang on your head, huh?" She leaned against the frame of the door. "I know you don't remember but I'd like to say sorry about my twin brother. He's not too friendly around kids... I can't believe he insists on hanging around Freddy's Place though.."
I racked my memory for anything of that day but everything was blank. I stuttered, "It-It's fine. I don't remember anyways..."
The girl stuck out her hand, "My name is Melody."
"I'm Rain." I shook her hand nervously.
"Nice to meet you Rain!" She smiled sweetly and stepped back. "Oh, hey Veronica. Come on, Helen's waiting."
I looked at Veronica and she gave me an apologetic smile, "Sorry, I'm off on a sleepover at Helen's house today..."
I stayed silent and looked back up at Melody, "I take it your little sister is Helen?"
"Yeah."
"Wow, your lucky. You're the eldest of three kids." I muttered, wishing I was older.
"Well, Vincent is also my age. We're only 64 seconds apart.." Melody shrugged before tugging on Veronica's hand. "Come on."
Veronica waved goodbye to me, "Don't worry. Dani will arrive!" Then she pointed to a car arriving, "See?"
I looked through the driver's mirror to see that it was, indeed, Dani. I smiled softly and raced over to her as she stopped the car at the side of the road. "Dani!!" I flung the car door open and hugged her tightly. She didn't hug back. I looked up to see she was on her phone. "Dani." I whined. "Get off your phone!"
Dani sighed and switched off her phone before reaching down and picking up my bag. "Get in the back. It'll be a 20 minute drive to my apartment."
I sighed, unhappy that Dani didn't even realise how great it was that she was here. I climbed into the back, slipping my seatbelt on, and looked out the window. I watched as Dani closed her door again and began driving again. She held her phone in one hand as she drove and I felt a twinge of fear. "You shouldn't be using your phone while driving."
"I know." Dani replied softly as she pulled onto the highway.
