summer ; 2022

summer time. jasmine's favorite time of the year.
she loved the hot breeze through her hair, the cold treats, time with family, and the drive down to cousins.

cousins beach. cousins massachusetts was where jasmine spent every summer since she was 7, she couldn't imagine a summer without thinking of the beach house.

the beach house was jasmine's second home. it was her house of firsts. the place she first she learned to swim. the first beach she's ever been to. the first place she's ever felt loved, and first place she learned to appreciate family. while she loved her brothers and her mom, the feelings she had towards steven were a little more complicated..
the summer she turned 15 is when she realized her complex feelings for steven. when she realized she liked him, she pushed the thought into the farthest corner of her brain. from that moment on, she swore to never think about it ever again.

this summer, she promised to push it away forever.

. . .

it was the morning laurel, belly, and steven would arrive. and jasmine searched the cupboards frantically as she checked her mothers list of items.
"lucky charms? we got that, okay.." she stopped and glanced back at the list, "we have that, we have that.."

she continued the process of talking to herself, and mentally crossing off the list in her mind.
she sighed in relief as she reached the bottom of the curled paper list in her hands.
"oreos?" she looked back at the shelf, and nothing, "dammit."

she pulled out a pen, and scribbled in a "buy oreos" note at the bottom.
jasmine closed the cupboards, and kept the list on the counter for later.
once her work was done, she went to the porch where she knew she'd find her brothers.

"hey," she greeted, and sat down on a porch chair in-front of them.
"nice of you to join us," jeremiah smiled.
"what were you doing in there anyway?" conrad asked.
"i was checking mom's list to make sure we had everything."
"really? you?"

jasmine nodded slowly, trying to see what her brother was getting at.
"you mean, you were being responsible and taking over mom's job for her?"
"yes...?
"wow..." conrad said, shaking his head in disbelief.
she scoffed, "you're such an ass."

after a few minutes, she impatiently looked behind her, then back at her brothers. jasmine tapped her foot.
"stop," conrad kicked her foot, and she kicked him back.
"why are you so nervous?" jeremiah asked, "it's just belly, laurel, and steven."
"i know, i know. it's just, it's been a few months since we last saw them, and like.. what are belly and y'know.. steven like now?"
"probably the same as last summer?" jeremiah said, a smile creeping onto his face. he looked over at conrad who had a grin on his face too.
"what?" she asked, glancing between the 2 of them, "why are you smiling?"
they shrugged it off like it was nothing, but she knew it was something.
"fine don't tell me then," she scoffed.
"we weren't going to anyway," conrad said blankly.

before she could even try to get a swear word, or 2 in, she was interrupted by the sound of a beeping car.
the trio turned to see the conklins car that parked into the driveway.

the siblings glanced at one another, and feverishly got up to go greet them. the only sound that ran through jasmine's head was the sound of their pounding footsteps down the porch, then the chorus of voices that greeted each other. jeremiah and conrad both went to hug laurel, which left jasmine to hug her last.

laurel smiled as she pulled jasmine onto a hug, "hi jasmine."
"hi laurel," she said into her shoulder. jasmine and laurel had always been close. ever since she came to the beach house all those years ago, she had always looked up to laurel. and when she was young, she'd follow laurel around everywhere.
as the 2 pulled away from each other, and laurel looked at her proudly.
"you're so grown up," laurel said, while jasmine laughed, "i'm serious jaz. you're not a little girl anymore.."
she only frowned in return, "don't cry laurel."
laurel smacked her arm lightly, "oh stop it."

she laughed again and hugged her again.
"we missed you," jasmine said.
"i missed you too."
when laurel let go of her, she cupped jasmine's face.
she smiled sadly at her, "i'll be inside, okay?"
"yup." was all she responded with, since she didn't really know what to say. she just smiled and laurel smiled back and walked off into the house. jasmine's eyes began searching for someone in particular but she couldn't find her. until a brown haired girl popped out of the passenger side door. jasmine tilted her head, until she looked again and saw, belly.
she ran over before her brothers could beat her to it. she gave her a body slam of a hug, that caught belly off guard. the 2 almost fell over, as belly hugged her back with the same amount of brute strength.

"jasmine!" she laughed, "i missed you!"
"i missed you too bells," she pulled away quickly, and gave her a glance over, "you look so... different!"
she slapped her shoulder, "shut up!"
"no seriously, you've really grown into your looks."
"i think i look the same," she shrugged.
"yeah, okay," jasmine said sarcastically.

she shoved her shoulder one last time before getting pushed to the side by jeremiah, who greeted belly next.
she gave an eye roll to no one in particular. jasmine tried to walk off, but she was stopped by a pair of arms that tackled her into a hug. oh right, how could she forget?

"steven?" she laughed, as he let go of her. jasmine turned around and met his smug face smiling at her.
"were you gonna go back in without saying hi to me?" he asked, with an offended look on his face.
she shrugged, "i tried to."
"you'd never leave even if you wanted to."

oh.
jasmine froze. he was right. she hated that he was right.

she quickly snapped out of it and shoved him lightly.
"whatever," she smiled.
he smiled back at her and pulled her into another hug.
"i missed you jaz."
she could feel her heart beat faster, "i missed you too."

when the 2 pulled apart, and she laughed awkwardly.
"well i'm gonna head inside."
"why don't you stay out here?"
"i'm gonna help laurel.. unpack."
steven shrugged, "okay."
"i missed you steven," she said as she ruffled his hair. he smacked her hand away and smiled.

jasmine went to the porch stairs, and jogged up into the house.
she quickly went up to her room, and shut the door behind her.

fuck. she said she wouldn't think about her feelings. she couldn't. but shit, he was making it really hard.

she sighed as she sat down at her vanity. what the hell was she going to do about herself?
