"Max!" Ember yelled as he pulled her up to a car. "Max, what's happening? Can you please explain? What the hell is going on?"
"I'll explain later," Max uttered, as Sammy opened the back door of the car and gestured for them to get in. "C'mon, Ember."
She pulled out of his grip, leveling her eyes with his. "What did you tell her?"
Max sighed. "Ember... I can't argue with you right now."
"WHAT DID YOU TELL HER?" she repeated angrily.
He and Sammy exchanged a look before Max gazed back at Ember with a sudden dark tint to his eyes.
Oh, crap.
She knew that look.
Before she could comprehend what was happening, he caught her arm and practically threw her in the back seat of the car, making her yell out.
But Max just got in and slammed the car door shut behind him, Sammy getting in the driver's seat as Ember struggled to sit up as they drove off seconds later.
Ember caught the edge of the car seat as Sammy sped down the road, holding on for dear life as Max eyed her over curiously before going to help her sit down.
She was gasping by the time he pulled the seat belt over her, holding a hand out to her when she moved to unbuckle herself.
"If you so dare as try to escape this car," he threatened, eyes darkening, "you will be stuck on my lap the whole car ride, hear?"
She shot him a look before stopping what she was doing, crossing her arms over her chest and staring out the window.
He sighed and settled his back against his seat and looked up to the front. "Sammy? News?"
"I got you a two-bedroom townhome," she stated. "One bedroom for Ember, the other for you. The big bedroom has a king-sized bed, whereas the other has a full. There's a basement and a secret passageway that you could use in case you need to escape. Full kitchen, dining room, and living room. Three bathrooms. And the windows are tinted so no one can see inside."
Max nodded in approval. "Good."
"Can someone please tell me what's happening?" Ember said then, anger rising in her tone, but he could tell by her blue eyes that she wasn't extremely pissed yet.
When no one answered, she rose her voice as something hot blazed inside her. "HELLO?"
"Shhh..." Max said then, gazing over at her with his black eyes, "don't freak, okay? Remember when I told you that some things are left good unsaid? This is that thing. When it is time for you to know, I will tell you."
She sank back in her seat, annoyed.
Twenty minutes later, Sammy got an exit off the highway and drove up to the drive thru of, McDonald's, tapping the steering wheel as she waited for the operator.
"Hello, welcome to McDonald's, will you be using the mobile app today?"
"Uh, no," Sammy stated.
"Alright," he said, voice chirp as if he were having the best day of his life, "what can I get you?"
"Uh, one burger," she stated, "and... one second. Max?"
"Ember, what do you want?" he urged.
She was silent, still staring out the window angrily.
He sighed, knowing her favorite meal anyway. "Get Ember a ten-piece chicken nugget with large fry and a cola. And for me...? Same as you, but a combo with the same as Ember."
