Max watched as Ember rested her head on his lap, asleep as the gentle sounds of the summer crickets echoed through the woods.
He didn't want to go back to the motel, honestly. It was too small and cramped, and they needed to check out tonight anyway.
He also gave the worker their key, so they were good.
But honestly, this was better than the motel.
She looked so peaceful out here.
As Max gently watched her, a single little firefly landed on his arm, and he smiled down at it. "Hey, bud."
He made a little buzzing sound and the light flickered.
"I know," Max responded, staring down at Ember. "Isn't she beautiful?"
The little fly buzzed away, and Max watched in awe as many of them settled around him and Ember, making their campsite glow.
But when he stared down at Ember, his breath caught.
Her skin glistened with the light's reflection, the soft white now yellow, and he'd never seen something like this before.
How her skin glowed like a lamp; like she was the only source of light in the darkness.
He smiled then, brushing some hair away from her face. "So beautiful."
