Ember woke slowly the next morning, lashes fluttering at the familiar sunlight beaming through the window of her bedroom.
She sat up then, staring down at the bed she lay in.
Huh, the last thing she remembered was him holding her on the couch... did she fall asleep, and he carried her here?
She slipped off the bed then, gazing around the room curiously before padding out to the living room and kitchen.
Her brows drew together when she noticed he wasn't here, so she went to his bedroom, finding the door open and the bed empty.
Huh?
"Max?" she called.
The moment she finished speaking his name, her phone chimed in her pocket, slightly startling her.
She tugged it out, seeing it flash "new message."
She gazed around before clicking it.
It was Max.
Find me.
"What?" she questioned no one in particular.
A new one popped up as if he heard her.
Let's play hot and cold.
"Huh?" she said this time.
Do you seriously not know what hot and cold is?
"No," she said aloud, knowing he could hear her, "I just don't know what you're doing."
A game, Ember. Play along, come on. When you find me, you'll be rewarded.
"Because that isn't creepy," she shook her head, "but, whatever. Fine, I'll play."
He was silent for a moment.
Then a new one flashed.
Right now, you are VERY cold.
She gulped down air as she unlocked the front door of their room and stepped out.
Cold.
Did he know where she was?
She started walking, looking left and right as she made her way down the hall and to the staircase.
Warmer.
She then wandered down the stairs, glancing left and right for signs of him but ended up finding none, so she just continued, heart pounding.
"This is kind of scary," she told him. "I like it."
Good. Warmer.
She continued until she met the lobby, finding no one behind the desk currently, and there were three dads sitting on a sofa while watching a football game on some TV.
She continued until she stopped at the door to outside, glancing down at her phone. "What about now?"
Two of the dads gave her a confused look but said nothing.
Warmer.
She walked outside then, looking to the right to see a path leading from the end of the hotel and down to the ocean.
"Now?" she asked.
Even warmer.
"You're scaring me," she laughed as she continued toward the path, knowing he was down there. "Seriously, this is fun."
I've never heard "you're scaring me," and "this is fun" in the same sentence before.
By the way, very warm.
