Ember tapped her nails impatiently on the table as Max eyed the diner's menu curiously.
She knew he was stalling; he could read faster than light.
"So..." she said then, making him glance up in feigned curiosity, "you wanna tell me why you're so on edge today?"
"I'm not," he answered defensively.
"Uh-huh," she said sarcastically, "sure."
His brows drew together. "What?"
"You haven't left my side since last night," she stated.
He shrugged. "It's not really anything."
"You're busting into my room at two in the morning, panicked, and then giving me this necklace the same morning, which is supposed to protect me from danger, for nothing?"
He nodded. "Mm-hmm."
She rolled her eyes. "Whatever."
Sometimes, she wished it was the opposite; that she could read his mind, and he couldn't read hers.
"Fine," Max stated, slightly annoyed, "you wanna be left alone? I'll leave you alone for a bit." He pointed at her. "At home. I gotta do something, anyway."
"Alright...?" she said then, eyeing him nervously.
