Ember sat on the couch of the living room, reading a new book Max had bought her ages ago, named, Forever Yours.
It was a really good romance, honestly, a little racy for young adult, but the story was nice.
She flipped to another page, getting too much into Alex and Donna's relationship.
Seriously, who named their child Donna at this day and age? Names varied by generation; rarely did she ever see a teen named Donna. Let alone Jeff.
And this book was written in 2003, not 1970.
She laughed softly to herself while she flipped to another page, enjoying the romance as well as the drama.
But the doorbell rang, and she paused, glancing up.
Huh...?
Why would Max ring the doorbell? He had a key.
Maybe he was carrying a lot of things...?
Should she answer it? What if it was someone dangerous?
Ember shot up from the couch then, eyeing the door carefully while leaving her book stranded.
When an impatient "hello" or another ring never came, she pulled out her phone and texted Max.
Hey, where are you?
He responded within seconds.
Store, why?
She gazed up at the door then, eyes narrowing.
Ember, WHY?
She could feel the panic rising inside him all the way across town.
Someone's at the door, she responded.
I'm coming home, he told her. Go hide. Now.
She put her phone down by her side and stepped carefully to the door.
Ember wasn't daring enough to open it for them, but she just wanted to see who it was.
So, she stood on her tip toes and closed one eye, leaning her hands on the door as she stared through the peephole.
She immediately pulled away and took two steps back.
She recognized the girl with blonde hair from anywhere... and the other with red locks, and soft, brown skin.
They were both leaning against the walls and staring at each other, annoyed.
Crap.
Alice, and her best friend, Stella.
Despite a part of her screaming to open the door and hurl herself at them, she continued backwards, hearing the floorboards creak from the movement.
The doorbell rang again, and she gasped at the sudden noise breaking the silence.
"Open this door!" Alice yelled, irate. "I DEMAND to see my sister!"
Ember blinked.
How did she keep finding them?
Well... last time Alice found her and Max when their mom died, Max found out that Alice hid a tracker in one of her jackets... but Max checked her for trackers when they got here. So...
How did she find them?
Ember continued backing away from the door.
She knew it would've been a horrible idea to keep hiding from her sister, especially with how angry and scared Alice clearly was, but she couldn't find herself opening that door anytime soon.
