"Um..." Ember said, sitting up fully in her seat as they parked on a dirt path. "Why are we here? There's nothing near here, even."

He smiled at her. "Amazing fun. Now get out."

She listened, slipping out from the car and standing on the dirt road as Max came around the car to her.

She looked around for a moment, and then back at him, noticing he was offering a hand.

"What?" she said.

He nodded to the distance. "You see that building out there?"

She scanned the valley, finding a very wide, but tall building just standing there in the middle of nowhere, although there were electrical wires leading to it from the poles, so it was powered.

"There?" she said.

"Yes," he responded. "We're hiking to it, come on."

She followed him when he started to it, deciding not to complain about the walk because it didn't look that far, and she had good stamina.

After about fifteen to twenty minutes, she couldn't remember, they stopped at the front of the building, and Ember gazed up, mesmerized at the height.

But when something somewhat potent wrinkled her nostrils, she gazed over at Max, finding him holding a gasoline tank in his hand.

Oh, no.

Oh, hell no.

"Max..." she warned.

He smiled over at her. "Oh, don't complain."

She stood there numbly as he went up to the building and dumped gasoline inside the windows, clearly making sure to spill it from the walls.

When he trailed the liquid to her, she looked at the building. "We could be killing millions of people, you know."

"Don't worry," Max responded, "no one's inside."

She looked at him critically. "How do you know?"

He tapped his head. "Only thoughts are you, my dear."

"Oh," she responded then.

He only shook his head and nodded to the car. "Follow me."

She listened, walking with him as he trailed the gasoline all the way to the place where they parked, and he then stopped about twenty feet away from the car, standing fully and wiping his forehead with his sleeve. "Woah... such a walk."

"Yeah," she responded angrily. "And that's not the worst thing you're going to go through. Check off hearing loss, as well. When that fire hits those electrical wires, expect a huge explosion. And with how dark it is out here? Expect burned retinas, too."

He smiled over at her. "You think I'd settle for a little explosion?"

She blinked.

"Don't be so nervous," he told her, shaking his head. "Just two days ago, you were going on about arson."

She crossed her arms over her chest. "I was joking."

"Uh-huh," he said, "sure."

Crap... he knew she was lying.

Max held out his hand then. "Come here."

She walked over to him despite her body screaming at her to run the other way.

She gasped as he pulled her to him, pressing his lips behind her ear as he held her.

"Cover your ears," he whispered.

"Why...?" she asked him.

"Just do it, baby."

She listened, closing her hands around the sides of her head and protecting her hearing.

She was joking when she told him they'd get eye and ear damage, from this distance? That would be a little hard.

But she watched as he stuck a match, lowering one of her hands seconds later.

"Do it with me," he said.

She listened, clutching the bottom of the match as he held the top.

Ember watched in awe as the fire burned from the stick, the edges of the flame disappearing in thin air, only leaving embers occasionally.

It was like a light in the darkness... but also a danger.

Who knew something so dangerous could be so beautiful?

Max pulled her hair over her shoulder and lightly kissed her neck, whispering in her exposed ear, "Drop."

They both let go of the match together, Ember gasping in surprise as the gasoline immediately lit with the slightest touch of a flame.

Max rose her hand back over her ear, wrapping his arms around her waist as the fire dashed down the line of gasoline at an instant, Ember watching in awe as it went up, over some hills and down some.

Then it slid up the walls of the building, and at first... everything was silent.

But a bright light beamed through the darkness, turning it day for just a second, and at first, Ember questioned what happened.

And that was then a loud, thunderous explosion boomed across the entire valley, making Ember cry out and shield herself from the vibrations the eruption, but Max pulled her face back to where it originally was, forcing her to look.

"Watch..." he told her.

She stared up at the building that was now covered, entirely in flames... but there was something else.

Ember pushed back into Max when a stream of light spun out from the building, going high into the sky.

And it burst, making her scream, but he kept her chin in place.

She then stared, watching the explosion emanate glitter that rained down above them, the embers of it dissipating in thin air.

Fireworks...

Another one came up, bursting and raining down gold, another followed, sparkling silver.

She watched in awe agaib, Max letting go of her chin and holding her waist, seconds later.

She kept her hands over her ears, until Max pulled them down, and she resisted a little before lowering them.

She hated loud noises, but the curiosity of what he wanted burned through her, forcing the thought away.

But then, Max lowered something over her head, making her glance down at it in surprise as it draped over her neck.

It was a necklace... and she could tell-even in the darkness-that it was a black pendant surrounded by a silver frame that only disconnected from the black on the top, both shaped like a teardrop.

Ember tipped her head back to gaze up at Max as he clipped it behind her neck.

He pulled her hair back into place, gazing down at her as she then decided to stare down at the black pendant, watching the fireworks reflect off it.

It... kind of reminded her of Max's eyes.

"It's an angelic necklace," Max told her gently, brushing his thumbs on her shoulders. "It will glow red when you're in danger. Always keep it around your neck, okay? Even in the shower."

She nodded, still staring down at the pendant.

"I should always be with you," he explained to her. "If I'm not there, call me if it glows."

She nodded again, unable to speak.

He gently pulled her into him and pressed his lips to her forehead.

"It's beautiful..." she finally told him, gazing up at him after. "Thank you."

He smiled, looking back up at the fireworks, and she did, as well.

And they both just watched the sky light up with dangerous beauty.
