"Max," Ember urged as he dragged her down the city. "Max, hey! MAX!"
He made an impatient noise. "I told you, I'm taking you to get food, okay? So, stop fighting."
"That's not what I'm...." She struggled against his grip as he continued pulling her.
She then tugged her arm back harshly, making him yell out when her wrist slid painfully from his grip, and she winced when she pulled it to her chest.
He glared. "Ember, I swear to God that if you keep fight-"
"MAX!" she yelled then, throwing her hand down by her side. "What is going ON? You're acting very strange, and it's scaring me."
He dropped his face, breathing harshly.
"Please..." she urged, "talk to me! You can't keep holding these things in!"
He was silent, shoulders rising and falling with anger.
She waited a moment, trying to let him form a sentence.
But he didn't.
"Max!" she begged. "Please, can you-"
"You keep getting too close," he interrupted.
She drew back in shock, brows drawing together. "What?"
"You keep getting too close," he repeated with more urgency, voice hoarse.
She tried to see his face, but it was covered with harsh shadows from him facing the ground. "To what, Max?"
He looked up, eyes glowing a dark red. "To death, Ember."
She was silent, but her brows drew together.
"Joe wanted to hurt you," he explained, irises beating as if the red in them were coming from a heart. "Then Scarlett? TWICE? Then Elijah two MONTHS ago! He almost DROWNED you, Ember! And a couple nights ago a man came into your bedroom? Then THIS?" He gestured impatiently to the direction of the grocery store.
She was silent, slowly piecing it together.
"So..." Max uttered, gazing up at her with angry eyes, "I made it final. AGAIN." His lashes lowered. "You are not out of my sight. Even if me or you has to take a piss, I'm checking the bathroom for threats, then waiting outside the door, got it?"
She shook her head then, making the red in his eyes grow darker.
"Ember," he warned.
"Don't you remember what I said?" She gazed up, blue eyes unbelievably soft as she smiled. "I'll do what you say, remember?"
The red in his eyes seemed to dull, and a smirk crossed his face.
"Come on," he urged, holding out a hand. "After today, I know you need your anxiety meds. So, let's get you some food, and I'll give them to you, Angel."
She happily took his hand, and he pulled her along the streets.
