Mason trods down the spiral staircase of her university building. The morning had not been kind to her. Neither her head or her heart.

She clutches her laptop and learning materials tightly between her arms as she descends with slow and weak movements—almost missing a step. Mara hurriedly catches up and holds the latter's waist with her two free hands, "Whoa."

Mason curses under her breath, "Shit." A lot of things could have gone horribly wrong if Mara were too late to catch her. "Thank you."

Mara nods. "I told you to wait, Mace." She takes Mason's belongings from her grasp and carefully slips them into her black tote bag. "Are you ok?" It was no surprise that the younger had trouble sleeping again. "You need to rest."

Mason shook her head firmly. "Babi, I have too much to do. There's so much I have to catch up on already. I can't fail this class I can't afford—"

"Your health is more important, Babi." Mara cut her off. "It's just a couple days. I know it seems like the end of the world but you won't be able to get anything done if you don't get better."

The doe eyed girl leans forward and presses a soft kiss on the younger's forehead. "I just want you to get better." Mara avowed. "It hurts seeing you like this. Get better, please?"

Mason took a deep sigh and nodded. "Okay. I'll take the rest of the day off." She promised. "But only if you take the day off with me too."

Mara ruffled the latter's hair with a cheeky grin plastered across her face. "You don't have to tell me twice." She intertwines her fingers with Mason and guides her down the stairs.

"Do you have any important deliverables today?" Mason questioned. Her eyes were glued to the stairs. "I just wanted to make sure that.."

"I can manage," Mara smiled warmly. "Nothing I can't do within a couple of hours. I'm all yours for today. I can sort them out afterwards."

Mara had no intention of leaving Mason's side. She cared too deeply of the latter's wellbeing. She couldn't quite bear the sight of her best friend in pain—it was a disheartening experience. All she wished for was Mason's speedy recovery, and for her to be happier.

She soon realised however that one of the two would be more likely to happen first. It was only a matter of finding out who, when and where.

The two find themselves on the train home in no time—home being two completely different concepts. Home can be a house or a person after all. "How much longer?" Mason croaked.

Mara squeezed Mason's hand tightly. "Not long now." She assured. "Is it happening again?" She shifts her body just enough to get a proper look at the girl beside her. "Does it hurt?" A look of worry soon showers over her as she scans Mason from head to toe. "You have to tell me if you're in pain." Mara pleaded. "Are you?"

Mason lifts her head off of Mara's shoulder. "Hey, you're doing it again." The younger emphasised. "I told you I'd be honest with you." She takes her hands and cups Mara's face gently. "I'm not hurting, Babi. I promise."

Mara felt her shoulders droop with relief while her head sinks at Mason's warm touch. She believed the girl. Mason's disease may not be the one hurting her right now, but deep down, Mara knew it was something else entirely,
