Mara felt her world break into specs of dust upon nearing the room that held the four walls that provided room for Mavis. The colour white had never seemed so prominent until this moment; where the walls, desks, chairs and even curtains were as bright as the moon in the night sky.

Her heart threw an endless rage against her chest; explosive and equally as terrifying. Mara couldn't recall a single day in the last three hundred days where she had not felt her heart burn into flames or tear itself into pieces.

It had been a reoccurring sensation that Mara had gotten extremely used to; she shouldn't have to be. She could feel the blood pumping through her veins at the same time that the air escapes her lungs. Her hands were curled into tight fists; her fingernails deep into the skin of her palms.

Mara could feel her throat tighten; her airway narrowed. She could barely breathe or swallow the sensation of an old lump that had formed the moment she walked through the hospital doors.

She could hear it; a heart monitor. It was louder than she first thought. She could feel her vision start to blur as she peeked through the door that remained slightly ajar. Mara could hear Ellie speaking to her from inside with a calm voice.

Mara watched carefully as Ellie dug a spoon through a cup of neon red jelly. "Mave." Her voice was a lot firmer than it was a mere moment ago. "I need you to behave. Stop acting like a child. You have to eat. How else will you get better?" She could hear the frustration in her voice as Ellie held out her arm. "Mavis." She pleaded.

Ellie turned her head. Oh. Mara realised that she pushed the door open; far and wide. The door was now fully open; enough for the doe eyed woman to finally catch a glimpse of her old flame. She felt her knees buckle at the mere sight of it; the young girl dressed head to toe in a white gown. Mavis wore a red beanie on her head.

Mara's vision had now completely blurred; full of lukewarm tears that were destined to fall any second now. The red beanie I gave you. Mara felt a small tug at her lips. Parts of her wanted to smile. Whether it be the mere fact that Mavis was still using the gift she bought while they were together or just the fact alone that she was right there in front of her. It seemed like forever ago,

forever since she last laid eyes on Mavis. Her heart cried along with her. This could be one of the very last times that Mara does get to lay her doe eyed gaze upon the young woman.

"Mara." Ellie stood abruptly. "You're already here. I didn't receive any calls or emails. When—"

Mara let's the tears run down her cheeks as she looks at her best friend. Ellie had resented her for some time; Mara couldn't blame her. This encounter was one of their firsts too. Ever since she had found out that they broke up and ever since Mara had found herself loving someone else. Ellie felt like Mara had been playing around too much and with 'people's feelings'. Mara couldn't help but agree. Maybe she did do that.

It was a surprise in itself that Ellie had been the one to reach out after all these months. I still resent you for everything that's happened between the four of us but that hardly even matters now. Mara could replay that conversation in her head countlessly. I know that things haven't been easy for you...and for us in general. I haven't even replied to Mason because she doesn't know what happened to you and Mavis. Maybe she knows now...I don't know. But I need you to know something. It's about Mavis. Mara knew that meant no good. It hardly does. She's sick.

Sick could mean many things. Mara knew that. Mason's leprosy was enough to get her absolutely worried and equally as terrified. It was different that time; knowing that her best friend was facing a disease that could affect her greatly while battling an incredibly difficult heartbreak. Mara was absolutely enamoured; having to witness the girl she loves while she suffered was excruciating.
