As soon as I stood in the court, it felt amazing, the sensational feeling of having that racket in your hand a tennis balls in your pockets. I've missed this feeling.
I could feel Ryoga's eyes on me as I tossed the ball in the air and smashed my racket down into it, hitting a perfect serve across the court. I smiled to myself, feeling happy, more confident now that this racket, my racket, was in my hands again.
"Wanna be double partners?" I asked jokingly as I turned to him, seeing him staring at me.
"Sure," he replied, his tone dead-serious.
"Are you joking?" I said, arching my eyebrows at him as I looked at him.
"Uh, no," Ryoga said, tapping his finger in the air as he turned serious. "I'm not joking. I think you'd be a good doubles partner, don't you? We're both pretty good, so why not? We've got nothing to lose."
"We don't have a team or a club we play in," I said, looking at him sitting down on the side of the house casually.
"I'm sure I could get Chibisuke to convince his captain to let us play and that we'll be exemplary and contribute plenty to the team," Ryoga grinned.
"Exemplary?" I mused. "Did you learn a new word?"
"That hurts," Ryoga smirked. "I'm sure I could help you learn how to kiss though."
"No. Back to the topic at hand, if you can get your brother to convince his captain to let us into the team, I'll accept as your doubles partner. If not, then you can pretend this conversation never happened."
"Deal!" Ryoga shouted, spitting on his hand and holding it out for me to shake.
I raised an eyebrow at him, at loss for words as I stared at him and then stuck my tongue out.
"I'm not gonna shake your spit hands," I mused, looking at him with a sour expression as I turned back to the court and slammed the ball into the serving box.
"Spit hands?" Ryoga said, sounding playful. "You're so mean!" He laughed and then got his own racket and went to stand on the other side of the court.
"It's not mean it it's true," I smirk, readying myself as he tossed a ball into the air, his wrist flicking down as the ball slammed into my side. An ace serve.
I blinked as it passed me and then scowled as Ryoga started laughing.
"Shut up, Ryoga!" I shout at him, grabbing a ball from my pocket as I tossed it up and hit it diagonally across the court.
He returned it easily and then hit it back at me.
I felt like a mouse as he made me run back and forth on the court, toying with me until I smashed it down when he lobbed.
I stuck my tongue out at him as I landed and the score tied 1-1.
Eventually, the two of us ended up laying on the cold ground on our backs as we rested, the game going unfinished.
"We'll decide who wins and finish this match at the end of the school year," I say, closing my eyes as I put my hands behind my head.
"Oh, so once we're a couple," Ryoga smirks, flirting every chance he got.
"You're a real shameless flirt, you know?" I muse, raising an eyebrow at him.
"But only to my dearest love of my life," Ryoga grinned.
I stuck my tongue out at him and closed my eyes for a few minutes, just laying there in silence with the cold grass and cement against my back.
"So, we'll ask Chibisuke to get us on the team?" I say softly, turning to face Ryoga where he lay next to me.
He nodded. "Yeah, my love. We'll ask Chibisuke to do that for us."
"Copy that, flirt," I respond, raising my eyebrows at him before sighing.
"What?" Ryoga asked. "You're sighing. Why are you sighing?"
"I just remembered, there's only eight regular spots on the Seigaku team and the rest are just members who practice there. That would mean two of the regulars would be booted if we got in and completed the tryout games for the regular matches," I say, putting my hands behind my head and looking up at the sky.
Ryoga shrugged as he copied my movements.
"Dunno. Or they could just add two more spots for us if they see how good we play as a doubles pair on the court," he said.
"Either way, let's go," I say, sitting upright for a second before laying back down and resting my head on the hard ground again.
"We can ask Chibisuke another time. Right now, let's just stay here, okay?" I smile as I look up at the right blue sky, little to no clouds in sight as the sunlight streamed down on us.
"Yeah," Ryoga nodded, pausing for a slight second before he smirked and turned to me. "Seems like a date now, right?"
I immediately look at him and scowl before shouting.
"Heck no! This is not a date! Emphasis on the not!" I shouted, sitting up and then climbing to my feet, heading towards his house. "I'm gonna go ask Chibisuke now. You stay here, flirty."
"Aye aye, love!" Ryoga shouted at me, saluting to my back as I went inside his home again.
Guess I'll just hope Chibisuke says yes. Maybe I'll have to do something he likes to get him to say yes.
