Konstantin stood at the bus stop, eagerly waiting for the bus that was supposed to bring Eva from the airport. They had agreed to meet at 11:45 PM at the bus stop near his house. Time passed, but there was no sign of Eva. Konstantin tried calling her, but all he got was a familiar female voice saying, "The subscriber is temporarily unavailable or is out of network coverage."
Something is wrong with the phone again, he thought. He contacted the consular center and learned that Eva's flight was delayed by a day due to the unrest in Myanmar. She would only arrive the day after tomorrow in the morning.
Feeling disappointed, Konstantin returned home, still carrying the bouquet of spray roses he had bought for Eva.
The morning didn't go well either. Konstantin ran down the street, running late for work and splashing water from puddles in all directions. As he entered the office, he was met by his boss, who pointed at his wristwatch, hinting at his lateness and not holding back in his expressions.
"Today, there should be a meeting with investors, and you're late. Would you care to explain?" his boss said.
Konstantin didn't make up any excuses and decided to tell the truth. He never liked lying, and he wasn't good at it either.
"I went to bed late, so I overslept," he admitted.
"I'm not interested in your sleep. You must come on time. Do you understand me?" the boss retorted.
"Yes, Sergey Lvovich. Crystal clear. No more delays," Konstantin replied.
Throughout the day, Konstantin dealt with investors, attending meetings in the office and production area. By the end of the day, all the agreements were reached, and the merger agreement was signed.
Konstantin didn't linger for team-building activities but headed home immediately to get some rest. He was no longer interested in listening to the boss's lectures about punctuality.
Physically and mentally tired, but satisfied with his achievements, Konstantin came home and fell asleep right away.
In the morning, he woke up to the sound of his pre-set alarm clock. After taking a refreshing shower and having breakfast, Konstantin stepped out onto the common balcony to smoke a cigarette, sipping on aromatic coffee. The time before lunch passed quickly.
During a business lunch at a restaurant across the road, Konstantin decided to take a short walk along the avenue. As he lit his second cigarette and took the first puff, his attention was drawn to a plane flying unusually low in the sky.
A feeling of strange, impenetrable anxiety engulfed him. A few minutes later, a loud bang followed by a strong explosion shook the surroundings. Konstantin was frightened, squatting down. The force of the explosion shattered the windows of nearby houses. He immediately thought of Eva; she was supposed to fly in today.
Within minutes, two fire engines and three ambulances rushed past him. Konstantin took out his phone to call Eva and check if she was safe. However, as soon as he took it out, a news notification popped up about a plane crash en route from Myanmar. Panic gripped him, and his fingers trembled as he tried to find Eva's number in his notebook, but they seemed to disobey him.
Overwhelmed with emotions, internal helplessness, and frustration, Konstantin smashed the phone on the asphalt with all his might.
Filled with despair, he rushed back home. When he reached his apartment, he immediately turned on the TV, and the urgent news confirmed his fears - there had been a plane crash.
Unable to bear the weight of his emotions, Konstantin yelled, throwing a glass at the window, shattering it to pieces. He collapsed to the floor, pulling his knees to his chest, and began to cry.
As his tears flowed, he heard a voice in his head saying, "Wake up, wake up!" He seemed to jerk awake, opening his eyes. His heart was pounding, and he was soaked in sweat. To his surprise, Eva was standing before him in a coat, holding a suitcase.
"You overslept again, my dear. It's good that I have the keys," said Eva, smiling.
Konstantin hugged her tightly, not wanting to let her go.
"I won't let you go anymore," he said, tears of happiness streaming down his face.
