Growing up in the ocean was a great time. The outside world was horrible, well that was the stories said. You have only seen the outside world once with your father. You are a rebellious kid you would always sneak off to go find random things in the ocean. You were responsible though never late to anything. Most of the time your family didn't know you were gone. There were many things you were curious about. How do humans walk on their two legs? Why do rocks get hot? Who builds all of these beautiful houses?

Once a year the kingdom has a celebration. This is where mermaids and merman of age can go up and see the surface. This year you were finally old enough to go with them. The celebration is always a happy time. The celebration had started, and you were watching the parade down the water street. You were so excited to finally see the surface again. "Hey Y/N you ready to see the surface," a voice asked. "Shiro of course ever since you got to go last year, I was so excited to go," you added.

The parade was still going and soon the King, Queen, and Princess came through. The princess had a thing for you, but you were not interested. "Oh look, here comes your girlfriend," Shiro said jokingly. "She wishes she was my girlfriend, but I don't find her attractive," you replied. As the royals passed the princess winked at you, and you just rolled your eyes. The parade has now finished and every mermaid and merman that were of age got to go to the surface. You and Shiro swam to the group that was going. "Is the surface beautiful," you asked Shiro. "Yes, it is beautiful," Shiro replied.

Everyone swam together and up to the surface. As soon as you poked your head out of the water you saw the surface. You saw a huge building that looked like a castle. You saw a line of smaller buildings and saw people with small boats at the dock. You were enjoying the surface until you heard a scream that only mermaids could hear. You and Shiro turn around and see a ship attacking your friends. You wanted to go over there but Shiro held you back. "Are you crazy you will get killed if you go over there," Shiro said. "What are we supposed to do, those are our friends," you asked.

Soon you saw blood in the water in the distance you saw the king coming. The king can create waves in the ocean. He makes the waves so bad their ship flips itself. You and Shiro swim to help those who were wounded. You swam to a mermaid, and you saw her tail fin was ripped in half and there was a gash in her sides. You try to wake her, but she isn't responding. Shiro comes up next to you and has a sad expression. "Y/N she is dead," Shiro said, trying not to cry. "She can't be," you say through tears. Shiro takes your hand and leads you away from the body.

You look at the flipped ship and upon closer inspection you see someone stuck in between some wood. You believe it was a mermaid. Shiro was heading back, and you turned away and swam toward the struggling mermaid. You look at the creature and you realize it is a human. The human looks startled but passes out from the lack of air. You know your life could be in danger, but you decide to help the human. You manage to get him free and swim to a beach not too far away. You set him down on the sand and maneuver your way back into the sea. You hide behind a rock to make sure the human starts to breathe again.

Sure, enough the human coughs up water and wakes up. He looks around confused. He starts to look into the ocean, and he notices your fin sticking out. He walks away and you breathe again. Only until you feel a hand touch your tail fin. You turn and see the human standing about waist-deep in water. "You're a merman," he asks. "Yes," you ask cautiously. "How many did my kind kill," he asked worriedly. "I don't know, I saw one, but that doesn't mean there aren't more," you say. "Look I am sorry I had no idea they were going to do that," he replied. He tried to step closer to you, but you backed away.

"You killed my kind, we are not friends," you defended. "I didn't kill anyone," he defended. You were still very unsure of this man, but you can't hold grudges for long especially if he didn't kill anyone his kind did. "What's your name," he asked calmly, breaking you out of your thoughts. You didn't answer him, afraid. "Well, my name is Lance," he responded. "Y/N," you said softly. "That is a very beautiful name," Lance responded. You looked away a little flustered. Lance notices and comes closer to you. You are even more flustered his shirt is wet, and you can see his abs through it. "You okay you look red," he said smirking a bit. "I ... I am fine," you said, trying not to make it obvious. He comes closer and like pins you took the rock.

"You know staring at my abs will get you kissed," he said softly. You are beat red and not sure how to respond. You hear a fair voice calling for Lance. "They must be my family. I should get going. We should see each other again. Tomorrow at two," Lance asked. You shook your head. Lance kisses you softly and leaves you behind the rock to go see his family. You were left stunned, but soon you snapped out of it and headed back towards home.

You swam back into your town and saw a lot of pain and sorrow in people's eyes. You found Shiro and you tapped him on the shoulder. He turns and hugs you tight. "Y/N where were you," Shiro asked. "I swam off. I was almost attacked so I could not come home afraid of leading them to where we lived. I am okay I lost them," you lied. Lying isn't something you do often. You don't like lying, but you know for the safety of yourself and the people you have to lie to Shiro. "How many did we lose," you ask quietly. "So far it is about 15 people," Shiro responded. "This is terrible," you replied. Shiro puts his hand on your shoulder, and you could not even look at him knowing what happened.

It was getting late, so you headed home. When you opened the door, you saw your parents sitting at the table. "We heard what happened. We are so glad you are okay," your mom said. "Me too, I am glad," you replied. You swam up to your room and lay down in your bed thinking about what happened today. You had to go tomorrow. Even though it could risk your whole town you had to go. Lance was pretty cute though, and he didn't try to hurt you. You thought about how many risks there were with meeting Lance tomorrow.

There wasn't an option you don't like not following your word but at the same time you know it could get you killed. In the end you decide to meet Lance after many voices in your head tell you not to. You fall asleep just waiting to meet Lance again.
