I stood deadly still as I took in the sight before me; he hadn't changed a single bit.
His hair still the dark, thick mess that I loved, and his eyes still so dark and full of secrets. He seemed to have bulked out slightly, the definition of his abdominals visible through his slightly-too-tight black t-shirt, but apart from that, he was the same Jay I'd left behind. Even down to the cocky smirk on his face.
"You," I whispered, continuing to rake my eyes up and down his stature.
"Me," he mocked, taking a step towards me with a grin still decorating his features.
"W-Where's Boss?" I managed, meeting his gaze again. Why was Jay in here? What was going on?
"You're looking at him, Princess."
My world stopped for a second as I took in what he'd just said. He was the Boss. Which meant the Boss that I knew had to be dead and he wouldn't be trying to kill me anymore. I wouldn't have to worry about getting out of here alive because... Because Jay was in charge now.
"How... What... I don't understand," I managed to get out, my head starting to spin. I swayed slightly as I tried to comprehend what this all meant now.
"Have a seat, Princess, I don't want you going all faint on me." Jay started forward as if to help me into one of the high-back leather chairs that faced his desk, but I lurched away and ran a shaking hand through my hair before sitting down on my own.
Instead of sitting behind his desk like I expected him to, he pulled the matching chair to my own up next to me and sat himself down, crossing his ankle over his knee and watching, waiting, listening.
"So Boss is... Dead?" I whispered but he somehow still managed to hear me.
"Yes."
"And for you to be the new Boss, you were either elected... Or you killed him yourself." Jay didn't respond straight away but simply held my gaze with the same hypnotic look he always used to give me.
"The latter," he finally responded, making me gasp.
"You killed him? Why would you do that?" A hundred different scenarios ran through my mind as I tried to come up with a reason as to why he would want to head the ND.
"You," he breathed, making me flinch. "Among other things, but you were the main reason. I couldn't have him chasing you to your death. I didn't want that for you, not after everything you'd been through with your parents."
"So you're Boss of the ND now?" I asked and he replied with a chuckle.
"It's not known as the ND anymore... I decided that the Nottingham Devils was far too immature as a name, especially for the new direction we were headed. It's called The Alliance now, mainly because I merged the original ND with lots of smaller gangs across Nottingham, so that we could expand quickly after Boss' death," he explained and I nodded, bizarrely liking the sound of The Alliance. It was much more mature, which was humorous seeing as Boss was the far side of fifty when I left nearly two years ago and Jay was only twenty three now.
