As the gym class came to an end, the transition to lunchtime was swift and seamless. It felt as though no time had passed at all, the sun-drenched field of the gym class giving way to the bustling atmosphere of the cafeteria. Finding my usual table, I settled into my seat, appreciating the solitude that my chosen spot offered.

However, my wish for alone time was short-lived, disrupted by the arrival of someone unexpected: Dani. She approached with a bright smile and a friendly greeting, and despite my initial desire for solitude, I couldn't help but feel a flicker of warmth at her presence.

"Hey," she began, her words accompanied by the energy that seemed to radiate from her. "The lunch lady complimented my hair, but I don't think she was happy about who did it for me. Not much of a talker," she continued, her tone filled with amusement.

I stared down at my packed lunch, my appetite momentarily forgotten. I had managed to overlook packing milk, a small detail that was now irksome. While Dani chatted animatedly about her interactions, I took advantage of her distraction to sneak a few sips of her milk when she wasn't looking. It was a small act of defiance against my own forgetfulness.

"Oh, I think that teacher's coming our way," Dani suddenly interjected, her words pulling me from my quiet moment. She had been recounting a story about her pet turtle that seemed to be taking an extraordinarily long time to complete a certain task. 5 minutes and 46 seconds to be exact. I turned my gaze in the direction she indicated, my heart skipping a beat as I saw Professor Minji approaching our table.

As Professor Minji drew closer, I couldn't help but feel a mix of nervousness and curiosity. Her stern yet captivating presence had become a familiar part of my life, and each interaction with her carried an undercurrent of uncertainty. I braced myself for whatever she might say or do.

"Hello, Haerin," Professor Minji greeted me with a nod, her gaze shifting between Dani and me. "May I join you both?" she asked, her tone professional yet holding a glimmer of something else.

I glanced at Dani, silently acknowledging that this encounter was not what I had anticipated. But Dani's expression remained friendly, a subtle encouragement that made me nod in agreement. "Sure," I replied softly, a mix of curiosity and apprehension bubbling within me.

As Professor Minji took a seat, I found myself observing her closely, the weight of her presence. She acknowledged Dani with a nod and a slight smile, her words carrying a hint of warmth. "I see you've made a new friend, Danielle," she remarked, her tone acknowledging the camaraderie between us.

Dani's enthusiastic nod and her mention of my hair-braiding skills caught my attention. "Haerin's so cool," Dani continued, her words brimming with genuine admiration. "She's amazing at braiding hair and at stealing my milk, haha," she added with a nervous laugh, realizing that she might be rambling a bit.

I couldn't help but let out a soft sigh, a mix of exasperation and amusement. Dani had inadvertently revealed my milk-stealing tactics, and I found myself wondering if Professor Minji would say something about it. I briefly considered the necessity of being more stealthy next time, realizing that my actions had not gone unnoticed.

To my surprise, Dani's nervous laughter seemed to break the tension, and I found myself involuntarily smiling. But then a startling realization hit me—did I just think "next time" in reference to stealing Dani's milk? My own thought caught me off guard, and I couldn't help but wonder if this newfound connection was slowly changing the dynamics of my interactions.

Professor Minji's voice brought me back to the present, her words carrying a sense of encouragement. "That's good, glad you made a friend," she said, her gaze shifting to me. I felt a mix of emotions swirling within me—gratitude for her support and curiosity about her thoughts on my evolving interactions.

In response to her statement, I picked up a piece of kimbap from my lunch and shoved it into my mouth, a simple action to mask the sudden rush of feelings that I wasn't quite ready to process. As I chewed, I let myself be present in the moment, absorbing the significance of this unexpected encounter, and pondering how these unspoken lessons were gradually shaping the path I was treading.

"I hope you're both enjoying your lunch," Professor Minji said, her tone carrying a touch of lightness.

I nodded in response, still chewing my food. Dani, on the other hand, seemed eager to continue the conversation. "Definitely! I mean, I would enjoy it even more if someone didn't steal my milk," she added with a playful smirk in my direction.

I swallowed my food and rolled my eyes at her, though a small smile tugged at the corners of my lips. "I promise, I'll be more sneaky next time," I said, my tone laced with seriousness.

Dani laughed, and Professor Minji's lips twitched in what seemed like the faintest hint of a smile. It was strange, the idea of sharing a moment of camaraderie with her. Our interactions had previously been marked by her cold demeanor, but this encounter held a different energy.

As lunchtime continued, conversation flowed more easily than I had anticipated. Dani's enthusiastic storytelling and Professor Minji's occasional input created a dynamic that felt surprisingly natural. I found myself chiming in every now and then, sharing snippets of my own experiences and thoughts.

The bell signaling the end of lunch finally rang, and I realized that time had flown by. Gathering my things, I glanced at both Dani and Professor Minji. "See you later, Haerin," Dani said with a warm smile.

"Until next time," Professor Minji added, her tone gentle.

I nodded, feeling a mixture of emotions as I watched them both leave the table. As the cafeteria emptied. The unspoken lessons that had guided my journey were now leading me to new connections, offering a fresh perspective on the people around me and the paths I could take.
