The following week at Ravenwood High seemed to pass in a blur. Haerin's mind was consumed by thoughts of her upcoming visit to her mother and how to navigate the delicate revelation of her relationship with Minji. Meanwhile, Minji, too, had been preoccupied with her own concerns, primarily focused on Haerin's future and the obstacles they might face as a couple. As the weekend approached, Haerin felt a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Friday afternoon signaled the end of the school week, and she couldn't help but think about the important moment that lay ahead. With her backpack slung over one shoulder, she made her way to Minji's classroom, eager to share her plans.
Entering the room, she found Minji grading papers at her desk. The soft afternoon light filtering through the windows cast a warm glow on the surroundings. Haerin cleared her throat to get Minji's attention.
Minji looked up from her work and smiled at the sight of her girlfriend. "Haerin, what brings you here?"
Haerin approached the desk, her expression a mix of determination and affection. "I wanted to talk to you about something important."
Setting aside the papers, Minji gave Haerin her full attention. "Of course, love. What's on your mind?"
Haerin took a deep breath before speaking. "My mom. She misses me, and my grandma mentioned it in a text. I've been thinking about visiting her in the hospital this weekend."
Minji's expression softened "Your mother is in the hospital, is she okay?"
Haerin's heart raced as she braced herself for the reaction she might receive from Minji. She had known that sharing this deeply personal and painful part of her life would be challenging, but she also understood that it was necessary for Minji to truly know her. She took a deep breath and began to speak.
"My mother is in the hospital," Haerin started, her voice quivering ever so slightly. "She's been battling cancer."
Minji's face shifted, a mixture of concern and understanding taking hold. Her brow furrowed as she processed the weight of Haerin's words. It was a heavy revelation, and she knew that the moment had called for compassion and empathy.
"Cancer," Minji repeated softly, her voice gentle. "I'm so sorry to hear that, Haerin. How... how is she doing?"
Haerin's fingers were tightly intertwined, her knuckles turning white from the pressure. She had expected sympathy, but Minji's understanding tone and genuine concern eased some of the tension in the room.
"She's been through a lot," Haerin admitted, her gaze downcast for a moment. "She's undergone chemotherapy, and it's been a difficult journey."
Minji reached out, placing a comforting hand on Haerin's shoulder. "Haerin, you didn't have to go through this alone," she said softly, her eyes reflecting her sincerity. "I'm here for you, no matter what."
Haerin's eyes flickered up, meeting Minji's gaze. The raw vulnerability of the moment was apparent, but it was also a testament to the trust that had grown between them. It was an understanding that they could share their deepest pains and joys without judgment.
"Thank you, Minji," Haerin whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
Haerin nodded, grateful for Minji's support. "But there's something else." She hesitated for a moment, then continued, "I want you to come with me and meet her."Minji blinked in surprise, the idea catching her off guard. She knew this was a significant step for Haerin. "You want me to meet your mother?"
Haerin nodded again, her eyes searching Minji's for reassurance.
Minji couldn't help but feel touched by Haerin's words. She reached out and gently took Haerin's hand. "I'd be honored to meet your mother, Haerin. And I'm proud to be a part of your life."
