Chapter One | Typecasting

Moving school one semester into the school year was not Ruby's ideal situation but she had to. Just less than a month ago her mother, Circe had died after being in a car accident caused by a snowstorm because of this she and her father needed a change but still wanted to feel close to her and so they decided to move to Salt Lake, the place Ruby was born and the same place her mother was a featured dancer/cheerleader in the High School Musical movies.
The last time Ruby had been in East High she was four and running around behind the scenes on the days her mother would bring her to set but now she was 16 and everything had changed.

Ruby had always loved to sing so when she heard that there were auditions for the musical on her first day she decided to sign up because why not, she needed some way to make friends and that was how she found herself in the auditorium after school.
Ruby was slightly creeped out by the drama teacher singing a solo of Beauty and the Beast as they held hands in a circle but persevered through the group song and was now running through her original song in her head as she waited in the hallway for the second half of the auditions to start when someone tapped her shoulder causing her to turn around to face a rather tall boy.
"Hi, I'm E.j, you were pretty good in there" he smiled earning one in return.
"Thank you, so were you"
"Are you new I don't think I've seen your face before?"
Ruby nodded before she replied "Um, yeah it's my first day. I'm Ruby, I'm a sophomore"
"Senior" E.j said before they were called back into the auditorium.

After watching everybody's individual auditions Ruby was nervous, one boy that Ruby believed was named Big Red had messed up his tap dance and although most people were supportive there was one girl who laughed and that was enough to get under Ruby's skin.
Ruby was called up last, she made her way to the piano at least 50 eyes on her as she did. Once she sat down she started to play and a few seconds later she began to sing.

Ruby had lost herself in the song, her eyes closed as she seamlessly played the piano, it wasn't till she stopped singing that she realised that she had shed a tear. She quickly wiped it away as the room erupted in applause standing up and making her way off the stage as Miss Jenn complimented her voice.

Ruby was cast as the narrator for the start of the production and was part of the ensemble for the majority, some might be unhappy with that but Ruby was not looking for the spotlight so she felt it fit her perfectly. She was just about to make her way over to E.j to congratulate him on getting Gaston when Miss Jenn stopped her.
"Hi, Your voice was incredible, I'm sorry I wasn't able to give you a bigger part in the show but stick with me, ok, I have big things planned for you in the future" Miss Jenn squeezed her shoulder as she made her way around Ruby and over to Lily.
Ruby smiled a little brighter because of Miss Jenn's praise as she finished making her way over to E.j "Hey, Congrats on Gaston"
"Thanks, hey a bunch of us are going to the pizza place downtown, you want to come?"
"Uh, yeah sure"
"Great, I'll give you a lift you can meet my cousin and her boyfriend on the way" E.j said as he lead them out of school and over to his car.

Ruby had been introduced to everyone once they arrived at Slices, Ricky even went as far as to spend 15 minutes explaining how his girlfriend Nini was the lead in the last show and then was accepted into a fancy performing arts boarding school.
Ruby was currently sitting in a booth next to Ricky as Kourtney talked to Nini on his phone. The phone was slowly being passed around as everyone told Nini their roles, it eventually made its way back to Ricky, him soon realising he hadn't introduced Ruby yet "Oh, Nini I almost forgot this is our new friend Ruby she just transferred to East" he said as he held the phone up to her face.
"Hi, Ricky had already told me so much about you" she greeted with a wave, Nini saying hi back before Ricky had to end the call to save the battery.

After spending a few more hours at Slices, getting everyone's number and being added to about 15 different group chats E.j finally drove Ruby home.
Once she got through the door she found her father sitting on the couch watching an old movie Ruby had never heard of "Hey, Sweetheart did you have a good day?" Rupert said once he saw his daughter enter the living room.
"Yeah, I uh joined the musical and I made some friends" Ruby said as she dropped her bag on the floor and fell onto the couch next to her dad "I think you were right, I think this might be a good change".

The song Ruby sings at auditions is Wake Up from Julie and the Phantoms btw and yes I did put the whole song in, it's just too good not to.
