~Beatrice~
The men fanned out around the edges of the clearing, surrounding them, every firearm trained on the sister warrior who stood frozen over the unconscious Halo bearer.
A calmness descended over Beatrice as she considered her options. It was quite clear there would be no running, it would be near impossible to carry Ava back to the car without getting one, or both of them, shot. She did have her phone in her pocket, but highly doubted that their enemy would just stand there and allow her to make a call to the OCS. The sister warrior knew that fighting this many armed guards would be just as foolhardy, in the light of day, there were no shadows to hide in, no element of surprise to exploit, and even if there was, Beatrice would not leave Ava, not for anything.
That left only one course of action…the sister warrior knelt slowly beside her girlfriend, observing the wave of tension ripple through the enemy at her movement, she raised her hands above her head.
“I surrender.”~
Every breath she took radiated sharp pain across her torso. After being manhandled into the back of a furniture truck, the bullet wound that never seemed to get a chance to completely heal was now openly bleeding through her cardigan.
Beatrice was lying face down, hands zip tied behind her back, on the bed of the truck. No less than four separate assault rifles were currently pointing at her, ready to end her life at any unexpected movement. Thankfully, Ava was lying beside her, unharmed.
It hadn’t been easy convincing the Russian, whom she now knew was called Dominik, to keep them alive.
“Kill them.”
“Wait! Please!” Beatrice shouted desperately.
“I thought you wanted the Halo’s power? Doesn’t the Bearer need to be alive to make that happen?”
Dominik sneered at her, crouching in front of the sister warrior, his scarred face uncomfortably close to her own, “We have the power we need.”
“Really? I don’t see it… you…you had to give it to your boss, right? Don’t you want some for yourself?” The Russian’s face changed as he silently considered her words.
She continued in a rush, hoping to persuade him, “She just needs to recharge, as soon as she does you can take as much as you want, there’s no one to stop you, no one knows where we are…”
A horrible grin crept across Dominik’s face, he stood and turned towards his henchmen, “Very well, secure the Halo bearer. Kill the spare.”
Heart in her throat, Beatrice watched as a gun was raised, pointing directly at her head.
“Don’t you want her…compliant?” She asked shakily.
The sister warrior hid her sigh of relief when her words had the effect she intended, Dominik lifted his hand to stop the guard from shooting.
“What do you mean by that?” He questioned, curiosity getting the better of him.
“Don’t you know who I am?” Beatrice paused, ensuring she had the Russian on the hook, he shook his head.
“I am the Halo bearer’s lover. She would do anything for me. Keep me alive and she’ll behave.”
Dominik smiled; the slow curl of his lips made her shiver.
The truck hit a bump in the road and the explosion of pain that followed brought tears to her eyes. Beatrice had no idea where they were going, they had been travelling for what seemed like forever, but that may have been due to the constant throb at her side. The sister warrior tried to ignore the ache, instead gazing over at Ava, eyes greedily raking over the signs of life, reassuring herself that the other woman was okay. Her girlfriend had been zip tied as well as collared with a cerulean blue metal ring. The Brotherhood was taking no risks when it came to keeping the Halo bearer restrained. Beatrice idly wondered if the relatively fresh looking scars on Dominik’s face had been inflicted by the younger woman during her captivity.
God, I hope they were.
The truck stopped abruptly, ripping her out of her thoughts as the momentum caused her to slid an agonizingly few inches forward along the metal floor. The guards rose to their feet, keeping Beatrice at gunpoint, and hustled them out the back doors into a large warehouse.
