Tuesday went by without much activity.
On Wednesday, Sarah came over for dinner to meet my mom.
"What time is your friend coming over honey?" my mom called from the kitchen.
"Uh, six-thirty," I replied from the dining room. I was setting the table. It was 6:20.
At 6:30 there was a knock on the door. "I'll get it!" I called from the living room.I opened the door and Sarah was standing outside, holding a cake. "Hey," I greeted her.
"Hey," she said walking in. "I brought a cake."
"Awesome. Follow me this way."
We walked into the kitchen. "Mom, this is Sarah," I said.
"Hello Sarah," my mother said. "Thanks for coming."
"Hello Ms. Minister," Sarah replied. "I brought a cake."
"Oh thank you."
My mom took the cake and put it on the counter. I led Sarah into the dining room. Leah looked up inquisitively from her seat. "Sarah, that's my sister Leah," I said, taking my seat. "Leah, this is Sarah."
"Hi Leah," Sarah said, sitting down.
"Hi," Leah said.
My mother came in carrying the salad. She placed it on the table next to the potatoes. My mom took her seat and started grace. I never liked saying grace. It took too long in my opinion.
"Bless us Lord and bless this food. We thank You for allowing us to have it to eat. Amen," my mother said.
As expected, during dinner my mom had a lot of questions. "So Sarah, how old are you?" she asked.
"I'm seventeen, but I'll be eighteen in a few weeks," Sarah answered.
"And you're a senior?"
"Yes."
"Good good. Do you live with your parents?"
"My brother actually. My parents uh, well, they passed when I was a freshman."
"Oh, I'm sorry," my mother apologized. "Do you attend church?"
"Mom!" I protested with a mouthful of chicken. I didn't think it was any of her business if Sarah attended church. It mattered to her however. If Sarah said no, I wouldn't be allowed to hang out with her. I probably wouldn't be allowed to talk to her either.
"Do not talk with your mouth full," my mother scolded.
"I do go to church. First National Baptist," Sarah answered.
"Oh," my mother replied. "We go to Saint Catherine of Alexandira's."
"I heard that was a very nice church."
"It is. So what do you and Riley plan to do on Friday night?"
"If it was okay with you that she could come over, I planned on doing some homework and helping her catch up to where we are in our classes."
"You two are together in class?"
"We're only together in band but we have the same classes at different times."
My mother thought for a moment. "I suppose it's okay, but Riley, you must check in with me at certain points. When you get there, if you two go out at all, when you go to bed," she said.
"Yes mom," I replied.
"We can head back to my house after school. It's a block away," Sarah said.
"I suppose that's okay," my mother said. "Let's have some dessert."
I helped my mom clear the table and set up for dessert, which was the cake Sarah brought. It was good. During dessert the conversation went by normally. There weren't anymore invasive questions. Around 8:30, Sarah had to leave.
I walked her to the door. "I'll see you tomorrow," I said, holding the door open for her.
"Yep. Thanks for having me over," she said.
"No problem."
I watched as she walked over to the car parked outside. I presumed that was her brother. After she left, I went upstairs. I put a pair of clothes in my bag and my toothbrush after I brushed my teeth. I packed up my homework and laid down in bed. I was nervous about the party.
I rolled onto my side. What was the worst that could happen?

I'm sorry that was really short.
