1 month later
After my mother saw the video, she immediately called Mrs. Polands. Mrs. Polands was not happy at all.I could hear her screaming at Aysha through the phone in the living room. I presumed Aysha was just as grounded as I was.
I was grounded for the rest of my existance pretty much. I was only allowed to leave the house for school, church, or the sessions my mother had me going to at the church to "cure me." I was to report straight home from school. I was not to speak to or interact with Aysha in any way. She only allowed me to have my phone at those sessions or in school; any other time it was locked away in her room. I was only allowed to text or call her or Leah and she was checking the bill to make sure. I had no laptop or TV. I really was only supposed to leave my room to use the bathroom or to eat.
My mother nearly pulled me out of band but I convinced her not to. I had already done the audition application for Julliard back in Oregon and I didn't want my skills to falter. The only good thing that transpired in the past month, I had been accepted to Julliard.
School had ended for the week and I laid on my bed, looking at the ceiling. I had a session on Saturday at 3 at the church. It would be the only time I would be allowed to leave the house this weekend. I wasn't even allowed to talk or see Sarah anymore.
I ended up falling asleep on my bed. It's what I'd been doing a lot. Sleeping, eating, practicing, and studying. I was awoken some time later by Leah knocking on my door. "Dinner's ready," she called through the door.
Leah had been avoiding me as well. Talking to me only when needed. She was afraid she'd "catch my disease." Or however she put it.
I sulked downstairs and sat down at the table. My mother said grace as always. I didn't feel very hungry that night. I just pushed the food around on my plate.
"Riley, you need to eat," my mother said.
"I'm not hungry," I grumbled.
My mother sighed. "How was your day today?" she asked, changing the subject.
"Oh, just dandy," I said sarcastically. "I got tormented at school like always and when I got home, I got to admire the paint on the ceiling for the millionth time in a month."
"You brought it on yourself," Leah said.
I glared at her. "Shut the hell up," I snapped.
"Riley! Watch your language!" my mother scolded.
"Tell her to mind her own business," I said.
My mother sighed again. "You have a session at three tomorrow."
"Oh joy."
"Mom's just doing what's best for you," Leah chimed in again.
I put my fork down and glared at Leah again. "Will you just shut up?" I asked angrily.
"She's right Riley. I'm just doing what is best for you. You can be cured and we can go back to normal."
"Cured?" I asked indignately. "Cured? I told you this a million times. I don't need to be cured. I didn't choose this. I'm just gay. Why can't you just accept that?"
"Don't say that word," my mother said angrily. "And you do need to be cured. God frowns upon homosexuality. It says so in Leviticus and Romans. He didn't make you gay."
