On Sunday, my mother picked me up for church.
We took our seat in the back and I saw Aysha walk in with her family. Instead of looking away this time, she smiled. I smiled back as well.
"Who was that honey?" my mother asked.
"Oh, a new friend I met. Aysha Polands," I answered.
"That's great. I know her mother through work. Good family, great values."
I snickered inwardly. My mother's version of a family with good values was fundamentally Christian, Republican, and straight.
The mass started. We went through all the usual things. At the end, Father Luke made his announcements. "We all know that the school announced that it would not cancel the Day of Silence," he said. "I'm saddened at this defeat. However, God had told us to hate the sin but love the sinner."
There were disappointed mumbles throughout the congregation. Father Luke wished us a good week. We got up to leave.
On the way out, my mother stopped to talk to someone in the lobby. She beckoned my to come over. "This is my daughter Riley," my mother said to the lady. "She knows your daughter, Aysha. Riley, this is Mrs. Polands."
"Hello," I said. She nodded with a smile.
"I was wondering if Aysha would like to come over for dinner," my mother said.
"Sure," Mrs. Polands said. "Around 7?"
My mom nodded. "That's fine. Does she have any allergies to food?"
I wandered over to the other end of the lobby while my mother and Mrs. Polands talked. Outwardly, I kept a normal level of happiness. Inwardly, I was doing a happy dance. I got to see Aysha tonight.
"Hey," I heard behind me.
I turned around and saw Aysha standing behind me, smiling. "Hey yourself," I said happily.
"So what are our respective mothers discussing?" she asked.
"Oh, you're apparently coming over for dinner around seven tonight."
"Really now? Awesome."
"Yep."
I saw my mother beckon for me. "Gotta go," I said. "See you later."
"See ya."
I walked over to my mother. "Aysha will be over around 7 tonight. I have to be careful cooking, she has a sensitive stomach," she said.
"Okay. Cool," I responded, trying to keep my smile controlled.
For dinner, my mother cooked some cheeseburgers and french fries. Around 7:05, I heard a knock on the door. "I'll get it!" I yelled from the living room.
I opened the door and saw Aysha and Mrs. Polands standing there. "I'm sorry we're late," Mrs. Polands apologized. "We needed a jump to get here."
"It's fine," I said. "Come in."
"I actually have to go. Have fun," she said ad she turned back to walk away.
I opened the door for Aysha and she came in. "Kitchen's this way," I said.
We walked into the kitchen and Aysha apologized to my mother. After she explained the situation, my mother smiled. "That's quite alright dear," she said.
We sat down for dinner. My mother said grace and we started eating.
"This is delicious," Aysha complemented.
My mother beamed. "Thank you."
We sat in silence for a little bit more. There was a lack of invasive questioning since or families knew each other. "So," my mother started. "How old are you?"
Aysha swallowed her food. "I'm eighteen. My birthday wasn't too long ago."
"Do you have a boyfriend?" Leah asked suddenly.
"Leah!" I choked.
Aysha just laughed. "Not anymore. We broke up at the beginning of the year."
I felt a twinge of jealously but I brushed it off. They broke up at the beginning of the year, no big deal. At the beginning of the year. I was 1000 miles away.
"I'm sorry to hear that," my mother apologized.
"Its fine. We just decided we were better as friends. I was wondering, off topic, if you would mind if Riley and I hung out together this weekend at my house."
"Sure," my mother said. "Will your mother be fine with it?"
"Yes."
"Then it's fine with me."
I smiled. "Thank you," Aysha said.
We finished up dinner and ate ice cream for dessert. After we finished, Aysha said good bye to my mother and Leah. We walked to the front porch together to wait for her mom.
"So, weekend at your house huh?" I asked with a smile.
"Yep," she responded, mirroring my smile.
"Is it like a date?"
"Typically a date involves going out, but it could be if you wanted it to."
"Sure."
"Your wish is my command," she said doing a mock bow.
I laughed and so did she. "My mom should be here soon," she said.
Aysha looked around an gave me a quick kiss. A horn honked. Her mom had pulled up. I gave a concerned look to Aysha and she shook her head.
Her mom hasn't seen.
I gave her a hug goodbye and watched her walk away. I smiled on the inside. Things could be okay.
