Throughout the week, my mother kept worrying about that Day of Silence. I didn't know what it actually was but she kept calling it "homosexual indoctrination."
"I highly doubt it's going to be a big indoctrination thing," I said while packing my bag to hang out with Sarah.
"Are you insane?" my mother asked. "Of course it is and you will not be going to school next Friday."
"As much as I would love to take a day off, I have to hand in a paper and absence is not an excuse," I countered.
"I'll email Miss Pope."
"That'll be the one that gets lost in hyperspace. How can they indoctrinate if they're silent?"
She was silent.
"And besides, I have an anatomy test and a math test so unless you want to wait at least a hour and a half for me after school, I suggest I go," I continued. "Besides, I know what the Bible says."
Saying the last part almost made me sick. I didn't know why.
"I guess you're right," my mother said. "I trust that you know God's rules as can avoid any temptation."
"Thank you. I'm going to meet Sarah now," I said, heading down the stairs.
"Where're you two going?" she called after me.
"Movies. We're seeing forty-two."
"Okay."
I walked out to the sidewalk where Sarah was waiting. "That took awhile," she said.
"Yeah, sorry. We were debating about that Day of Silence thing," I told her.
We started walking. "Well, what did she say?"
"That is was some gay indoctrination thing and she wanted to keep me home. I told her no and that I had tests."
"You gave up a free day off? Why?"
Aysha, I thought. No, wait, I didn't just think that.
"I don't want to make up the tests."
"Uh huh, sure."
I stuck my tongue out at her and we entered her apartment. I put my bag down and waited for her to talk to Xavier.
Around 6:00 we left to head to the theater. It was a longer walk than what we took to get to Luke's house.
We got to the movies around 6:20. The movie started at 6:30. We bought some popcorn and soda.
I wasn't a big baseball fan but the movie was good. It ended around 8:40. Sarah and I walked outside. We stretched. "How'd you like it?" she asked.
I opened my mouth to answer but I felt something hit me in the head. I turned and looked. It was an empty soda cup from the movies. I looked up to see Melinda smirking.
I turned back to Sarah. "I see the maturity level is so high here," I said, loud enough for Melinda to hear. "Probably why I got the solo."
Sarah snickered then focused her eyes on something behind me. I felt Melinda's hand spin me around.
"Oh hello, I said.
"Listen bitch, I will get that solo," she growled.
"See, that would require me giving it up. I thought we discussed this."
"Melinda, just leave her be," Sarah said.
"Shut up," the girl standing next to Melinda said.
"I'm fine," I told Sarah.
Melinda pinned me against the wall of the theater.
"You will give it up. You're new. Why are you so special?" she seethed.
I smirked. "Ah, is this jealousy I sense?"
She backhanded me. The ring on her finger caught some of the skin on my cheek. I grunted in pain.
Sarah backed up. I have her a look that said "go." She nodded and took off.
"I believe our religion prohibits violence. Aren't envy and rage two of the seven deadly sins?" I said.
"Confession works wonders," she said.
"The other one disappeared," her friend informed her.
"Shit."
"Language. I see your confession list is growing bigger by the minute," I snickered.
She backhanded me again and her ring also caught another spot. I shut my eyes and inhaled sharply. Rings hurt.
I felt the pressure of Melinda's hands leave my shoulders abruptly. I opened my eyes. I saw Melinda pinned to the wall next to me.
I also saw very angry Aysha doing the pinning.
