Graduation Day
I sat in my chair on the football field amongst the rest of my graduating class. I was finally done with high school and this year in general. The valedictorian was giving her speech on the makeshift stage. It was hot and it made me glad that my graduation gown was white, unlike the boys who were blue.
I saw Aysha sitting on the section across from mine. She looked bored. She caught my eye and gave me a smile.
"...and most importantly, congrats class of two thousand thirteen!" the valedictorian concluded.
The salutatorian gave his speech then the principal. I just wanted to graduate and see my dad. My mother and Leah didn't come. I wasn't surprised.
After the principal finished his speech, the band started to play "Pomp and Circumstance." They started to call out the names for the diplomas.
A few names went by then I heard Sarah's. I could see her smiling as she shook hands with the school board president.
A few more rows went then it was my row's turn to stand, file out, and wait for our names. I was actually very nervous and I could feel my heart beat quicken.
"Ryan Markus."
Two more.
"Paige Megan"
One more.
"Tyler Miller."
My turn.
"Riley Minister."
I walked towards the mini table of diplomas and shook hands with the school board president. I was given the traditional "Congratulations" and then I walked back to my seat. Now I officially graduated.
The rest of graduation went by smooth and Aysha gave us all a small laugh when she threw her fist up in the air in victory whilst walking back to her seat.
After all the names were called, the principal gave us another speech. Then we stood and threw our caps in the air. I kept my eye on mine so I could get it after it landed.
I picked up my cap and went to go find my dad. It didn't take long. He gave me a hug. "Congrats," he said.
"Thanks," I replied
"So can I meet this Aysha girl? You talk so much about her."
I laughed."Sure."
We walked around the field looking for Aysha. We found her near one of the goalposts with her father. Her mother and brother didn't come.
Once she saw me, she smiled. "Hey," she greeted.
"Hey," I said.
"So you're Aysha," my father said.
"Yep."
"It's nice to meet you. Riley told me so much about you."
"Dad!" I exclaimed, embarrassed.
"Did she?" Aysha asked with a smile, ignoring my outburst. "Interesting."
My father invited Aysha and her father out to dinner with us. We were going to go to Olive Garden. They accepted and would meet us there.
In the car, I took off the graduation cap and gown. I stayed in my clothes underneath. Once we were there, the four of us went to a booth in the back.
Aysha's dad and my dad sat next to each other and Aysha and I sat across from our respective fathers. I felt happy. I was out of high school and would soon be starting college. I had a scholarship to pay for it all as well.
The four of us chatted casually while waiting for the food. I got the Seafood Alfredo. Aysha got the Chicken Alfredo. Both of our fathers got steak.
We discussed college and future plans. Everything was good. Then my mother walked in with Leah. Why she had to be everywhere I happened to be was beyond me.
My father saw her and sighed. "Ignore them," he said. "If they say anything, I'll handle them."
My mother did see us but probably decided that bothering us was not the best idea so she just glared. I didn't care though and Aysha, being Aysha, decided to give me a kiss on the cheek. My mother's eyes nearly popped out of her head and all of us had to stifle a laugh.
After dinner, we all went outside. My father and Aysha's father went to go smoke, leaving us some time to talk.
"So I got an apartment up in New York," Aysha said.
"Oh?" I asked.
"Yeah, courtesy of my grandparents. I'm moving in within the next two weeks, just to get out of here as fast as possible. Want to move in with me?"
I smiled. "Of course. I'll pitch in with the rent once I get a job up there."
"Greatly appreciated."
She kissed me and we just discussed schools after that. We could see that our fathers were nearly done with their cigarettes. "I'll pick you up and we can drive up to New York together."
"Sounds good. I'll let Sarah know."
"Cool cool," she said. "Oh, guess what?"
"Hm?"
"I love you."
I smiled and blushed. I always did when she told me that she loved me. "I love you too."
"Forever?"
"Forever."
