Chapter Fifty-Five: School Break-In

(The Monster And The Superhero, Pt. 4)

***

They arrived at the high school just as night had fallen.

The five of them didn't waste any time to get out of the car and race to the school after grabbing some flashlights, where Max crouched down and unlocked the door with one of Ms. Kelly's keys. As she did, Alistair unzipped his bag, Hugin flapping out and alighting on his shoulder, claws digging in as the door swung open and they walked inside, flashlights on and lighting up the dark corridors of Hawkins High.

Max walked farther ahead while the rest of them trailed behind, footsteps echoing in the silent halls—until the walkie in Dustin's hands crackled to life and Robin's voice came through.

"Dustin, do you copy?"

"Yeah, I copy," Dustin answered.

"So, Nancy's a genius. Vecna's first victims date all the way back to 1959. Her shot in the dark was a bullseye," Robin reported, making Alistair nearly stumble as he exchanged a shocked look with Cami. Vecna had victims in 1959? Decades before El opened the gate at Hawkins Lab?

What?

"Rowan was also right on the money," Valerie revealed, and Alistair blinked in shock. Rowan had a hunch of Vecna having earlier victims as well? "She had a hunch about this, and she was correct."

"Okay, that's totally bonkers, but I can't really talk right now," Dustin replied.

"What are you doing?" Robin questioned

"Breaking and entering into school to retrieve some personal and highly confidential files," Dustin revealed.

A beat, then Rowan's voice saying incredulously, "I'm sorry, they're fucking what?"

"Can you repeat that?" Robin requested.

"Just get your ass over here, stat. We'll explain everything," Dustin ordered before he turned off the walkie. At that, Alistair rolled his eyes, but he grew serious again when he saw Max slide the stolen keys into the lock of Ms. Kelly's office door and opened the it. As they entered, Alistair felt a brush of cold and he looked over his shoulder.

Nothing was there, not even ghosts, and yet Alistair's skin crawled, like something was watching him.

Alistair tried to ignore it as he followed after his friends, Cami closing the door behind them, as Max went to the filing cabinet to look for Chrissy's file while Dustin stood there, saying, "It's like a mini- Watergate or something. Hawkins-gate."

Cami rolled her eyes. "Yeah, this is totally like that, Dustin."

"Wait, didn't those guys get caught?" Steve asked out loud.
