Alistair didn't know how long he had been running for.
It felt like hours since he'd started running, it felt he hadn't been running for long, but Alistair didn't care, as long as he was running away from Vecna, to get away from his impending death, he had to run, he had to escape, he didn't want to die again, he had to get out!
As he ran, he ran out of the void and found the doors to the rainbow room and he pushed them open, sprinting through them and down the corridor, the hallways feeling more labyrinthine than they had before as he whirled around, panic clawing at him, choking him of air, because Vecna was close, he was coming, he couldn't escape him but Alistair had to try, he needed to, he had to get away.
And though it was foolish, though no one could hear, Alistair screamed with all the desperation he had inside him, "Hugin! Cami! Can you hear me?! Please, can you hear me!? Help! Hugin! Cami! Rowan! Max! Mike! Lucas! Dustin! El! Will! Will, please! Cami! CAMI! Help! HELP!"
Nothing. His friends, his sister, the boy he loved, they couldn't help him. No one could.
A noise between sob and scream burned in his throat, but it wouldn't slip out as Alistair turned and saw Vecna approaching.
Alistair's heart leapt to his throat and he ran to a door, trying to force it open but it wouldn't open, locked.
"Come on, come on, please open!" he begged.
"You can't run away from me, Alistair. You can't run from death," Vecna rasped, crawling along Alistair's skin like a thousand spiders.
"Watch me try, you son of a bitch!" Alistair yelled with more defiance than he felt as he gave the door one last wrench before running to another, too aware of Vecna creeping closer, fear hammering through him as he violently wrenched on the handle.
"Come on, you stupid piece of shit, please fucking open! Please!" Alistair begged, voice raw with desperation as he gave one last tug—and it gave.
Immediately Alistair was inside, slamming it closed. Panting, heart thundering in his chest with enough force it might burst out from it, Alistair looked up.
And saw he wasn't in a room in Hawkins Lab.
Swallowing, Alistair walked forward, shoes sinking into the spongy grass as he walked to the shape jutting out in the distance, his heart sinking further and further when he arrived and saw what it was.
