Chapter Fifty-Three: A Brief Reunion

(The Monster And The Superhero, Pt. 2)

***

After Nancy and Leo had finished answering questions, they got into their cars and joined up with the rest of them at the trailer park. There, they headed to a picnic table and squeezed onto it, five on each side.

Alistair was squeezed between Dustin and Cami, Hugin stowed away in his backpack, resisting the urge to pick at the skin around his nails as the group sat in silence for a few seconds, nothing but the slight breeze disturbing it, until Nancy asked, "I assume you guys know something's going on about the murders that Leo and I don't, right?"

Alistair looked at Cami, Dustin, Rowan, Steve, Max, Robin and Valerie, before Rowan looked back to Nancy and nodded.

"Yeah, we do," she confirmed.

At that, relief flooded Nancy's face. "So you know something about what happened to Chrissy and Fred?"

"Who's Fred?" Steve asked before Alistair could.

"Someone who works on the paper with Nancy and Leo. Well, worked. He was, uh, also our neighbour," Valerie explained, her and Cami exchanging a look, as Rowan looked at them and Nancy and Leo sympathetically. Alistair looked away, thinking of last night, of how he felt Fred's death, the brutality of it, of how that must have been what Chrissy experienced, what she felt before the dark ended her pain. He shuddered at the memory, thinking again of how monstrous Vecna was, resisting the urge to touch his chest, his scar.

"Back to the original question. We know who's actually doing the killings, Nancy," Dustin jumped in, pulling Alistair's focus back to the conversation. "It's not Eddie."

Nancy nodded in agreement. "I know. His uncle seemed confident in that when Leo and I talked to him yesterday. He said it could be someone else."

"Yeah. It's definitely someone else. But it's not who his uncle is thinking," Dustin informed, and now Nancy was the one confused.

"Who, then?"

Steve made to answer that question, but Dustin stopped him as he side-eyed Leo, who also looked very confused.

"Are we sure we want to talk with him here?" Dustin asked, glancing warily at a still-confused Leo.

"Everyone here knows. It's kinda unfair if he doesn't," Cami pointed out.

"Plus, Eddie also knows," Alistair reminded, not believing what he was hearing. At this point, it was stupid to not let Leo know what was really going on in Hawkins just like it was stupid not to tell Eddie about the Upside Down and unfair when everyone else here knew. He deserved to know the truth.

"Yeah, only because he saw what happened to Chrissy," Max argued.

"Still, it's unfair if—"

"Can I jump in?"
