Your POV
You and Lionpaw went back to the Sky Oak, where Ashfur was padding along the shoreline.
"There's nothing." you said to Ashfur, your paws sinking into the sand.
You noticed, for the first time, the trees around the Sky Oak were widespread. Lionpaw was jumping on the lower branches of the huge tree. At least he wasn't high enough to take fall damage.
"I'm glad the Clans have been peaceful." Ashfur was very close to the water's edge, peering at his own reflection.
"Peace is sort of boring." you said.
Ashfur's tail twitched. "Don't go looking for fights."
You felt a tad bit annoyed. It felt like you were an apprentice again, taking a scolding from an older warrior.
I'm allowed to voice my own thoughts, Ashfur. You hissed in your head.
You kicked some sand into the water, rippling his reflection.
"Sorreltail should be back soon enough." Ashfur mewed, turning away from the water. "She hasn't gone too far."
Lionpaw jumped down from the Sky Oak. "It's almost sunset."
Lionpaw was right. The sky was a mix of orange and blue, mostly blue though. The sun was just past sun-high.
You went closer to the water. You stared at your own reflection. Silky f/c fur and e/c eyes that sparkled like stars.
The water rippled. You caught a clear view of your reflection and back away. Why?
The f/c furred e/c eyed cat that shone in the water was replaced with a menacing f/c she-cat with a scar running down her left eye. Blood stained her paws and teeth. Her e/c eyes were slits that had no light.
Was that me?
You splashed the water with your paw to get rid of the image. It was just your imagination. Being in the Dark Forest was tiring.
You looked back at Ashfur and Lionpaw. A fast moving shadow across the ground caused your gaze to shift.
"What was that?" you glance at Ashfur.
"Was what?"
"There was a shadow-"
A loud screech made your ears ring. A shadow flashed across the ground. A bird shadow. It was huge.
"Is that a hawk?!" Lionpaw shrieked, sprinting to the cover of the Sky Oak's branches.
The hawk dove down, straight for you. You jumped out of the way, but the hawk's talons scraped your tail.
"Ouch."
You unsheathed your claws and so did Ashfur.
"Not so boring now, huh?" Ashfur growled, backing away.
The hawk circled above the cats, not as high as the Sky Oak. There was barely any place to take cover. Your eyes darted for bushes, brambles, undergrowth or ferns. Nothing to hide in.
Another ear-piercing screech of the bird made you flatten your ears.
"Climb the Sky Oak!" Ashfur shouted, sprinting to the trunk. The hawk dove down and missed him by a tail length.
Lionpaw paused then jumped onto the lower branch.
You gazed up at the tree. Lots of leaves and branches. The hawk probably won't get you there?
You followed Ashfur and Lionpaw steadily. You clawed at the bark, jumping from branch to branch. The ground became smaller and smaller. Leaves brushed your paws and pelt.
