Chapter 5: Suspicions

Police Department

"Another 6 inmates were found dead last night, and all were heart attacks?" Soichio questioned with a grim frown." It's certainly him but what do you mean by bizarre behavior before they died, could you be more specific? Are you saying that they didn't just die from heart attacks?"

"No." The stated before continuing." What I'm saying is they all died of heart attacks but it wasn't quite that simple, because before one of them died, he drew a pentagram on the wall of his cell using his own blood. Another left a letter but it doesn't seem to be a will or anything meaningful, and as for the third victim, he escaped from his cell and ran all the way to the staff bathrooms before he died."

On the other side of the room, Watari observed the situation before turning on a wireless transmitter.

"What is it, Watari?" L asked through the device.

"Three more heart attack victims. However, the circumstances of their deaths are different from what we've seen thus far," Watari responded calmly.

"What do you mean by different?" L questioned with a hint of concern.

"I'm sending you a copy of a letter as well as pictures taken at the scene," Watari stated as he quickly sent the file to L before turning off the device.

"It sounds like he was afraid that Kira would find him." L mused to himself quietly as he stared at the image as emotion flickered across his face for a moment before disappearing." It's believable that our victim might've been genuinely afraid and wrote this, but we know Kira can control the time of death. What if he can also determine the actions in the moments leading up to death, if that's the case then..."

Police Department

"Chief." L's synthetic voice sounded through the room.

"L?" Soichiro spoke to confirm he heard, the Chief looking up from the file he had been reading a moment prior.

"We can't release details of these men's deaths to the media." L warned, his tone grim even through the voice changer." As far as they are concerned, these are just heart attacks. I have reason to believe that Kira was performing some kind of test using these criminals, and if that's the case, we'd only be giving him the results if this information is leaked to the public."

"I see, understood," Soichiro agreed before turning to face the room where a panic was rising ever so slightly in the room.

"S-So now he is experimenting on his victims?" an officer questioned, the man's voice wobbly, indicating fear.

"That's horrible," Another officer mumbled, and the officer looked sick and like he might throw up if given any more details.

"He is playing with people's lives as if all this was just a game." Soichiro confirmed with a grim nod, his hands clenched tightly to his side." It's unforgivable."

"If Kira is really using criminals as test subjects, what is he trying to achieve?" L asked the room before the computer clicked and the voice went silent once more.
