Chapter 9

HAWK

Since the moment Princess Faith spoke to me the other day, she tried to converse with me more. She tried to speak to me every time I was delivering her food, but it only lasted a few minutes before I had to go.

I think she just spoke to me to be polite. We never really spoke about anything fruitful.

My routine was still the same. I knew I needed to be more patient with my search, but I was never a patient person and I'm itching to leave this place as soon as I can.

A month would be nothing to the majority of people but I'm still a wanted person in my kingdom and staying in a single place for a while is a huge risk.

The only reason I got to stay longer in Trolux was because a lot of the people there had their whole bodies hidden and covered, so my identity was safe.

The only comfort I have is that this kingdom is so private that I barely see any outsiders coming in, so I wouldn't have to worry much about someone coming here to look and ask for me.

The thing that concerns me is how rare locals leave the kingdom. I don't know if it's to keep them from adopting outsider views or to keep them from saying something to the outside.

I've been here for almost a month and none of the Royals went on trips outside. Even the knights aren't allowed to leave the kingdom and those are usually the ones that go out to visit other brothels and towns outside their kingdom.

This is another mystery I needed to add to my list.

I entered Princess Faith's room carrying her food and as soon as I entered she closed her book to give me her full attention.

After fixing her food, I stood by her table holding the empty tray. We were a little farther from each other which was good. I learned that Royals here keep their distance from maids and servants, either for safety or they just find them appalling but I'm not about finding that out.

I stood straight and faced her. She was already looking at me, "I want to go out tonight," she said casually when my eyes landed on hers.

Lady Antonette still hasn't given me my pass to leave the castle much less the kingdom, but I guess that didn't matter.

She stood up gracefully, her dress was now red and fitted her upper body like a second skin and flowed down her legs, "Don't worry, I've been doing this for years and I've never been caught," she said with a convincing smile.

That smile alone is probably the reason why she never got caught. Anyone would do anything she says with that smile.

I nodded, "Okay," I replied.

She bit her lip in uncertainty, "I guess, I'll knock on your door at midnight," she said.

And that's how our conversations usually go. A few words and we're done.

I nodded again and bowed before exiting her room and entering the privacy of mine.

I need this opportunity to know more about the kingdom, I just don't know how to go about it yet. I can't just ask the Princess questions. She seemed to be very smart and I didn't want her to be suspicious of me.

It's also one of the reasons why I speak so infrequently. I don't want us to get comfortable with each other, I'm not here to make friends.

I just need to watch her and maybe I'll get lucky and hear something.

I sighed and threw myself on the bed. I don't even know where we're going or what we are doing, but I would assume she will only go to an outside library to get books. That was the only thing I could think of about this Princess.

Princess Faith seemed to be the same as a lot of princesses that I've met. They're proper, always know to be polite, sit straight, and always do what their parents expect them to do.

Even the sneaking out wasn't new. That's why I wasn't surprised she asked me to accompany her in her little rebelliousness.

There's always one Royal child who sneaks out to feed their curiosity and Princess Faith seems to be the one who tries to learn as much as she can.

But I know that we wouldn't be going somewhere risky. Royals are still terrified of being kidnapped and killed. Most of these young Royals just go to the market to see how normal people live and come back to the safety of the castle walls.

I stood up and took out my coat and put it by the chair to get ready for later.

I just hope I get something this first time I leave the castle.
