HAWK

I heard a knock on my door making me jump and hit my head on the bed frame. My whole length could barely fit the bed and I was forced to sleep with my head touching the wood.

I stood up groggily and opened the door with my hair sticking up everywhere.

Princess Faith was standing outside already wearing a thick cloak to cover her whole body and a hood over her head looking at my door with a little confusion.

"Oh shit," I mumble and looked behind me to my room and turned back to her as she patiently looked at me with a small smile, "Your Highness, I'm sorry I fell asleep. Let me just get my cloak," I said and I heard her enter behind me as I rushed to wear my cloak, button it up to my neck, and fix my wavy hair a bit.

"I'm ready," I said as I put my hood above my head. I turned to her to see her looking around in complete bewilderment around my room. The small space could barely fit us both.

It looks like this was the first time she entered this room and she was shocked and quite horrified. She turned to me, "This is where you've been staying?" she asked.

I looked around the tight space, "I think this is where all your maids have been staying, Your Highness," I said.

"I could barely fit that bed and you're taller than me," she said quietly and she looked around.

My clothes and nighttime shorts were thrown casually over a chair and I blushed when I noticed and opened the door, "We should go Your Highness," I said so she'd leave my room and not risk her seeing my dirty clothes or worse my underwear somewhere. Even though I feel like it was only fair since I accidentally saw hers which made me blush remembering the lace and the delicate patterns.

She was still in thought as she walked out in front of me and then I closed the door behind me. She was angry as I followed her down the stairs.

"It's fine, Your Highness, I've stayed in worse," I said remembering the times I was traveling and staying in the back of a broken carriage just so I wouldn't get eaten by roaming bears.

She turned to me, "You're not supposed to stay there, the maid quarters are on the first floor." She shook her head facing the front, "I just don't get it. I had my suspicions but it seems like they're making it hard for my maids so they'll leave." she mumbled.

That's probably true. The more time I stayed here the more I understood why her maids kept leaving and it's not about Princess Faith. She is the most low-maintenance Royal I've ever met. The high-maintenance Dark Royal of Vitalis suddenly popped into my head.

I guess they just wanted Princess Faith to look bad and be seen as a rowdy and troublesome Princess. I just don't know why.

Was it jealousy? or maybe it's a completely different matter where they just like seeing outsiders like me lose their every bit of pride and self-respect?

"I'll look for a different room you can stay in," she said as we stopped on the second floor.

I shook my head, "No, I'm fine," I said. Lady Antonette will give me more shit when she finds out. She will think I'm getting special treatment and make it harder for me. And when her eyes are on me I wouldn't be able to sneak around the castle. Plus, staying with a dozen maids in one room will be a challenge when I'm trying to find out information.

She turned to me confused, "That bed must be uncomfortable," she said.

Yes, it is. It feels like I'm sleeping in a bed of rocks, but I don't say that. Instead, I say, "It's okay, I like it." I said.
