Suri's POV

It's the day after the meadow. Bambi and I hide in the den as mum exits it. She tells us to come out. "It's safe now. We don't have to hide any longer" she assures us. We come out.

"What happened mother?" Bambi asks.

"Why did everyone and us run?" I ask.

"Man, was in the forest" she answers.

"What's man?" Bambi asks.

"They are very dangerous, if you ever see one. Run as fast as you can" she tells us. We nod our heads. We stay close to the den. Because even though it was safe. Mum still wanted us to be cautious, just encase. I felt eyes on us and look up. I see the Great Prince looking down on us. We lock eyes and he turned around walking away. Why does he seem to care for us so much? Could he be our father? Mum never talks about him.

The leaves started to change colour. Mum says it's because autumn has come and winter is approaching. I asked when winter would arrive. She said with the first snow. Whatever, that is. Mum has started to wean us onto solid food. Eating a mix of grasses, forbs, and shoots. With milk and water.

We have been foraging with other deer. Safety in numbers mum said. Also Bambi and I were big enough to keep up. Faline was there also with her mother Ena. And Oliver with his mum Jemma. I notice he foraged by himself a lot. While an adult male deer seemed to keep her company. When I asked mum about it, she said she'd tell me when I'm older.

Oliver and I have become good friends. I'm also friends with Faline. Who I think Bambi has a crush on. Though he'd never admit it. Bambi saw his friends Thumper and Flower occasionally. There have been no farther sightings of man. It appears they've left the forest.

Food is starting to become scarce as it gets colder and the leaves begin to fall. Mum says some of the deer will move on soon in search of more food. Only a few will stay like us. I hope Oliver and Faline don't leave. It's nice having friends. Mum says Thumper and his family won't leave. So Bambi will have a friend. At least Bambi and I will have each other, & mum.

Anyway, I was sleeping soundly by mum when Bambi wakes us both. It's colder then usual. "Mother, look! What's all that white stuff?" Bambi asks. Mum and I look outside. I see the ground covered in white stuff.

"Why, it's snow" mum tells him.

"Snow?" we ask as I go sniff it.

"Yes. Winter has come" mum tells us. Bambi and I go out to explore. Mum telling us to stick together. We notice footsteps in the snow behind us as we walked. Bambi and I fall into a pit of snow. When we get out I'm shivering and we continue on.

Soon we run into Thumper. "Hiya, Bambi, Suri!" he calls. "

Watch what I can do.

Whoo!" he cheers sliding along the surface of what used to be a river. We watch him in surprise. "Come on, it's alright" he tells us.  "Look! The water's stiff" he states thumping it. Bambi takes a running leap and lands on it. Falling to his belly and I laugh. It must be slippery.

"Hi Princess" Oliver says appearing beside me. While Thumper tries to help Bambi to his feet.

"How many times must I ask you to call me Suri?" I ask him.

"I like princess better" he states. "What's Bambi doing on ice?" he asks.

"Trying to slide like Thumper" I state and he chuckles. "So what brings you here?" I ask him curious. He sighs sadly. "What's wrong?" I ask him concerned.

"Mum and I are leaving" he states.

"What?" I ask shocked.

"We were only staying until the first snow" he explains. "But I'll be back next spring, promise" he assures me.

"I'll miss you" I tell him and he smiles.

"I'll miss you too Princess" he state and nudges me gently. "I gotta go, mum wanted to leave now before there's anymore snow" he tells me.

"Is Faline going too?" I ask.

"Yes, but not as far. You'll most likely still see her around" he states. "See you next spring" he tells me before leaving. I watch him go to his mother. She gives me a sad smile and they leave. He looked back before disappearing from sight.

I go find Bambi and Thumper. I found looking into a den, where a tired Flower is. "No. Winter's just started" Bambi tells him.

"What ya doin'? Hibernatin'?" Thumper asks Flower.

"Uh huh" he says yawning.

"What's hibernating?" I ask.

"Sleeping through winter" Thumper tells me.

"What do you want to do that for?" Bambi asks Flower confused.

"All us flowers sleep in the winter. Well, good night" Flower says rolling over going back to sleep. Bambi, Thumper and I explore some more until our mothers call.

(Mini time skip)

Mum has barely found enough food for all of us. Her milk has dried up and any water we drink it freezing. Bambi and I lay with her in the den after another long day of searching for food. "Winter sure is long, isn't it?" Bambi asks.

"It seems long" mum tells him. "But it won't last forever" she assures us.

"I'm awful hungry, mother" Bambi states.

"Same" I add.

"Yes, I know" mum says sympathetically. "Get some sleep, I'm sure we'll find more food soon. Besides after winter, comes spring" she states. I smile, I'd get to see Oliver again then. I fall asleep dreaming about my time with him.
