After six months of hell, I climbed back up toward the top. I was considered more anti-social than Ghost. Being around my team again felt strange, but so enthralling in the field. We worked like gears together, seeking and destroying and completing missions. Things almost felt normal in a twisted way. But I was a new person to them, and I had something more substantial at hand to be played.
Makarov.
That name brought up pent-up hate and anger I never knew I carried. He'd pay for his actions. I wanted to be the one to put the last bullet through him, right between the eyes. I wanted to watch his final moments play out, his thirst for power quenched. I wanted to be in control.
"Alright everybody, settle down! Settle down!" Price's voice echoed through the meeting room, instantly shushing the entire room.
"We all know why we are here. Makarov isn't dead." His voice boomed as whispers broke out, heads turning back and forth as a quiet chatter ensued. "He's taken too many of our own. It's time we end things, here, now. On our terms."
I felt a nudge in my ribcage, nipping my attention. I whipped my head around to see Soap's eyes staring into mine. I felt a brief panic, before remembering I was someone different. I lifted an eyebrow, brushing him off, turning my head back towards Price. I could hear him grumble before another sharp poke interrupted my thoughts.
"What?" I quietly hissed, trying to keep my attention based on the captain.
"You excited for this mission?" He whispered back, a playful smirk on his lips. I sighed, shaking my head. He had to interrupt me for this?
"About as any other would be," I dryly responded, hoping this meeting would go by quicker. I kept my responses blunt and short so as to not draw attention to me. It never seemed to work though. Somebody would always turn the subject toward me, praising my ability, saying it was remarkable for someone who just joined months ago. I had to hold back. Blend in. The meeting swiftly ended, and I rushed out, running for my room to hide. I could hear them call out my pseudonym.
The day zero of the mission arrived faster than anyone expected. We loaded into our helicopters, until reaching our own hidden base in Russia. I remembered this one. I hid in many as I played dead, struggling to travel out under disguise. Price called out pairings for an initial scope of the area. Ghost and Soap. A sergeant and a rookie. König and me.
I felt myself jolt up, unwavering attention on Price. He ignored the look I gave him, continuing to call out names. I slowly could feel the presence of König's eyes boring through my body. Fuck. Once we were dismissed, I hastily caught up with Price, demanding to speak with him in his office. He falsely agreed, playing along with the game until his door firmly shut. He gave me a small glare, before sighing and plopping himself into the temporary office chair.
"Why on the magical fuck would you pair us together?" I snapped, throwing my arms up, and scoffing toward him. Hell knows what he would have said if he wasn't so forgiving. He softly raised a hand up to stop me from continuing on.
"I have to pair experienced with inexperienced. You're supposed to be playing stupid. It won't be a long task. You know you can't avoid him forever," He lectured, grabbing one of his cigars before lighting it up. I watched as he inhaled sharply, his lungs catching a couple of times before he let the smoke softly trail out of his lips. It made its way in front of my face, slightly choking me out. I sighed, knowing I kind of put myself in this position.
The bus ride out to our drop-off points didn't ease off any of the tension like I hoped it would have. König's eyes seemed to almost bore past my skin and into my soul. It's like he knew who I really was. The entire ride, his eyes never left my features. I silently swore under my breath, hoping he wouldn't catch on after all this work.
Our stop arrived and we pushed ourselves off of the bus, stepping out into the snow-filled forest. We'd have a few miles to walk before coming close to surveillance territory. However, the snow left us at a huge disadvantage. We were trackable. The bus squealed as it creaked to a stop, throwing us off on our own. I exited first, taking in the scenery for a brief moment. I could hear König grunt as he stepped down, his bag slightly weighing him down. The bus pulled off, leaving the two of us alone. I immediately felt his eyes bore down onto me, I prayed slightly before beginning.
"We've got about 3 miles north before we'll hit their base." His eyes lingered for a moment before he spoke.
"Nein. Es ist im Süden. (No, it's south.)" I lifted an eyebrow. I wanted to argue, but I knew he'd pull rank quickly. I sighed, slinging my own bag harshly over my shoulder.
"Alright then. Lead the way." And with that, we began our trek in the wrong direction.
I could no longer feel my feet as I drug them through calf-high snow. It had started falling earlier and never seemed to let up. I heard König harshly sigh.
"Verdammt (damn it)!" He huffed, searching around for a moment before making eye contact. "I believe I was wrong." I looked at him in disbelief, exhaustion screaming in my legs. The sun had almost set now, leaving nothing but sparse moonlight. I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose.
"Let's just find a base for the night. Survive this cold." Our search began before we luckily landed on an abandoned cabin. Some of the windows were busted, but it'd have to do. We settled in, starting a fire to warm our frostbitten limbs. Yet, that didn't seem to do enough for me. My teeth violently chattered, König's eyes once again staring through my soul. He was thinking about something.
"Are you still cold?" His voice slightly startled me. I nodded, hovering my hands over the flames. I could hear him shift, the floorboard creaking before he sat down behind me.
"Lean back."
I followed orders, my back resting against his stomach. I could hear it growl. We both were starving. Things stayed quiet, his body slumping over occasionally while he drifted in and out of sleep. He mumbled in his half asleep state, his words almost too quiet to hear. Yet one thing almost sent me into cardiac arrest.
"I know it's you, Y/n."
