As I open the door to my house with Hao behind me, I am greeted by a lot of lights. My house is fully illuminated, every having at least one light open. I sigh in frustration and shout out to Jude
"Jude? Are you the one who turned on all the lights?" I shout, annoyed. Jude sticks her head out from the staircases a few seconds later, a bored expression on her face
"Maybe?" she says, forming into a question, as if she weren't sure herself
"Oh my god, Jude stop being so bratty. Let's save money, yeah?" I say, rolling my eyes, forgetting that Hao is behind me. Jude rolls her eyes as well after seeing me
"You talk about saving money when you take three hour long baths. Kinda hypocritical if you ask me" she shouts back, getting away from the staircase and going back to our shared room. I let escape one last sigh before taking off my shoes
"We have company. Try not to do something stupid" I shout, loud enough to make her hear me. I hear Hao snicker, also taking off his shoes.
"Company? Who? Is it Ricky?" She shouts back, barely understandable
"No. It's Hao" I shout simply, leading Hao into the living room. Immediately, there is the sound of footsteps going down the stairs
"Hao? As in Zhang Hao?" she asks. Hao smiles beside me, taking out his notebooks while sitting on the floor. Jude pops her head behind a wall of the living room, and her eyes shine as she sees Hao. She skips into the room and smiles at him.
"Jude, can you leave? We need to study" I say, shoving her away by the shoulder. She looks at me with a judging face and shrugs me off
"I need to study too"
"That's great Jude! You can study upstairs. Be thankful or I'm locking you out of my room"
"Whatever" She says, rolling her eyes, then smiles at Hao, then looks at me again with a scrunch in her face, scanning me with her eyes before walking out. What a brat.
"I wish I had a little sister like yours" Hao says as I sit on the white couch.
"Oh, no you don't. Believe me or not, she's a pain in the ass. I've never seen such a breatty person. The only reason why I'm trying to put up with her is because I feel bad for her" I say
"But haven't you ever thought about the privileges of being an older brother?"
"Not really"
"It sounds so cool. You get to protect your younger sibling, and be there for them whenever they need it"
"Has Cho ever done that for you?"
"Not really. She has her own things to worry about. Have you ever done that for Jude?"
"Not really. I have my own things to worry about" I reply with a mumble. It's true that I've never been there for Jude, but it's mostly because just a few weeks ago I hated her. I never really spoke to her until she moved into my room. And even after we started speaking, I never even noticed that there was a serious problem with her classmates. I never even thought more about her bruises.
Hao hums in understandment
"You're just like Cho" he says
"Why does that sound like a bad thing? Shouldn't that be a good thing?" I ask, and amused smile playing on my face
"None, really. Cho's peculiar"
"So are you," I say. Hao looks at me and shrugs
"Not really. Cho has a uniqueness in her. She has her own attitude, and she knows what her limits are" he looks at me "Just like you. You have your opinions and you stick to them"
I look back at his eyes and wonder what he is feeling at the moment. His words sting. He doesn't see what makes him, well, him.
"You are peculiar, Hao. You just haven't noticed it yet 'cause you're too busy playing a character of someone who isn't you," I say, leaning onto the couch, eyes not leaving his "When I first met Cho, she showed me a painting. She said it was yours. It was one of the most beautiful pieces of art that I have ever seen. Not because it was pretty and well organised, but because it was unique. That's your character, Hao. It's someone who's all over the place, disorganised, but something in them is just endearing and calm."
Hao smiles lightly after hearing my words, and the smile grows by the second
"That was kinda..." he starts and trails off
"Funny?" I try to reply to him, worried that he found me ridiculous
"Reassuring" He replies. I smile in relief
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. Thanks, Hanbin" He says. I nod
Hao doesn't stop smiling, but it stays there. The more the seconds pass, the more my heart fastens its beat. I see him. The real him. His real character. Not a person that was created and sculpted by the liking of a cruel society, but I see him for who he really is. A boy, a young and vulnerable boy, pressured by the harshness of a world so big, but he himself is big with uniqueness, colours bursting out through his eyes, as if a whole universe lied within them. A vulnerable boy, who has the world of experience in his eyes, but doesn't know it.
"You're smiling a lot" I say, smiling just by seeing his joy
"You said that you liked my smile, didn't you?" He says in return. I nod
"I do"
