Chapter 39

He knocked on shadows door kind of excited to see his hedgehog look-alike , he tapped his foot as he waited for the door to open then knocked again feeling impatient, he felt like he had been standing in front of this door for forever when it'd only been a couple seconds.

The door finally opened and he felt relieved but nervous for a reason he couldn't understand but that all went away when he saw who opened the door "oh hey rouge" he said to the white bat "don't sound so disappointed blue" she said with an amused expression "let me guess you were expecting shadow weren't you?" She added "a little, where is he?" Sonic asked "why do you need to know?" Rouge said leaning against the door frame "i just have some stuff to give him" he responded starting to get impatient again.

"you can just give them to me" sonic was a bit hesitant, he wanted to give the stuff to shadow personally but he eventually just gave the pie and the knife to rouge he was bummed out by it but he just decided it was time to go back home

"Thanks rouge" He said then turned around, maybe he can just come back tomorrow?
Rouge watched him leave not expecting the other's disappointment she was teasing. It really made her wonder... "hey blue." Rouge said calling after him before he got out of ear shot, sonic looked back with a confused look "he said he went to the store, In station square." She said

Sonics face lit up "alrighty see ya rouge!" he said quickly before running off. Rouge sighed "yup they're a thing.." she looked down at the things sonic gave her mainly looking at the pie "oh well" she said with a smirk knowing what she was gonna be snacking on and headed back inside the house.

He ran through station square looking for shadow though it was hard, there was hardly anything to go off of. There could be hundreds of different stores shadow could be in!- oh wait there he is.
Sonics feet screeched to a stop as he looked over to the familiar dark hedgehog who was exiting a grocery store with a couple of bags in hand, sonic was too far for shadow to notice him just yet. Sonic went it through for a moment, shadow looked kind of mad maybe he should approach him with caution not to make him even more angry?

Sonic quickly ran up to shadow "hey shads how's it going?" He asked excitedly earning an annoyed look from the other "what are you doing here?" Shadow spat "i was just looking for you i wanna hang out" sonic replied "no that's weird, and we're not friends anymore."

Sonic snapped himself out of his daze, he hadn't even realized he had gotten lost in thought like that, he's overthinking this too much shadow wouldn't say that. Or would he? 'Cmon Sonic it's just shadow what's wrong with you?' He thought to himself he had no clue what was up with him lately he's just been so nervous

He started making his way to shadows retreating form taking a more subtle approach "hey shadow" he called out while waving to get his attention and it worked, shadow stopped walking and looked back recognizing the voice "What're you doing here?" Shadow asked calmer than what Sonic thought he would he stayed still letting the other catch up "i was just wandering around until i saw you, so what's up?" Sonic said though it wasn't a complete lie.

"i was just going home" he responded "sweet, mind if i tag along?" Sonic asked wich the other just gave him a suspicious look, "just for a while?" If it was a race or a spar the other wanted he wasn't interested at the moment. "what do you want hedgehog?" "Nothing! Can't i just walk my friend home?" Sonic said, shadow just stared at him for a moment before uncrossing his arms "fine. Do what you want sonic" he said and started walking again expecting the other to follow. Sonic stayed close beside shadow then decided to start a conversation after walking in silence for a couple seconds "hey shads?" Sonic said "hm?" Shadow hummed in response

"Remember the mission GUN put us on, and everyone was acting weird?" Sonic said "yeah?" "It wasn't just me right? Everyone was acting a little strange, especially that butler guy what was his name again..?" He said tapping his finger against his chin in thought "Charles?" Shadow asked "oh yeah, him!" Sonic chirped "I didn't like him." Shadow commented "phew thank you, he was kind of rude" he said with a sigh "kind of?" Shadow said raising a brow 'kind of' was an understatement, "okay so he was rude, are you satisfied?" He asked with a smile "very." Shadow said cracking a smile "good thing we're never going to see him again then" sonic said and shadow just nodded in agreement.

It went silent again but not an awkward one. By now the two Mobians were too used to being together to have any awkwardness around them.

The two hedge kept walking just basking in each other's presence and it felt good, no pointless arguments or races to see who's better, no villains to fight, no flowers trying to mess with their brains again

Everything was just..

Calm. Even despite the whirlwind of thoughts  going on in both of the boy's head's.

"Sonic.." shadow said this time it was his turn to break the silence "yeah?" Sonic responded but shadow ended up staying silent for a second "..never mind." He had changed his mind last minute, but Sonic wouldn't just let it slide. "What, no. what were you going to say?" Sonic urged "nothing i said never mind, hedgehog" "aw cmon don't be like that shads" he replied playfully nudging the other's shoulder.

"It's nothing important" he said still trying to get sonic to stop "i still wanna know, is that so bad?"shadow just gave him a stern look and sonic stared back with the most serious face he could muster, until he broke "ugh fine, you're no fun." Sonic said giving up while shadow had a victorious smirk in his face, but the fun was suddenly cut short by-
