NEXT STAGE
STARTIt was almost like the billboard was taunting them.
It was the following day, and the big screen had said that since yesterday afternoon. Ren stood there, arms crossed, growing more and more annoyed as the minutes passed. They were told that the second stage would be starting that afternoon, yet nothing had happened.
"None of the games have started yet." Arisu commented.
"Maybe we still have time." Usagi didn't sound convinced in her own words, but it was a possibly theory.
"Or they forgot to push the big red start button." Chishiya said. Ren looked up at the sky to keep herself from laughing. Arisu and Usagi didn't seem appreciative of Chishiya joke.
"They didn't even tell us about the rules for this one." Kuina said. And just as Kuina said that, Ren and Usagi turned their heads when they heard something. Kuina noticed Usagi. "What is it?" She asked.
Usagi walked away from the center of the crosswalk. "I hear something." The group turned to see what Usagi was hearing. Ren could hear something but she couldn't identify what exactly she was hearing. It was too distant for her to get a good idea.
Ren groaned. "Well fuck."
"They're alive." Kuina said. "Beach people." A dozen or so cars came down the road towards the crosswalk. The cars parked around them, looking around for the game that was supposed to start at noon. Ren crossed her arms as Arisu walked forward to speak to one of the former members of the Beach.
Ren jumped when one of the people was thrown sideways, a gapping bullet wound to his face. Suddenly, another shot rang out, killing yet another person, going straight for her stomach this time.
Ren looked around, trying to find the active shooter.
"A rifle." Chishiya said.
"What's happening?"
"Get moving."
"Run to the car!"
Ren started to back up slowly, heart pounding rapidly as she stuck close to Chishiya and Kuina. "That thing's an anti-tank rifle." Ren gasped loudly when the bullets hit the car that some of the people were heading towards. Chishiya stopped, drawing back slightly. "So I'd forget about hiding behind a car." He commented.
"Would you move, idiot?!" Ren grabbed the back of his sweater, pulling him back with her.
Ren started running, following Kuina, Arisu, and Usagi. She ducked when another set of bullets went flying, killing the person right in front of Arisu. "Where's it coming from?" Usagi shouted.
"Run! Run!" Arisu ordered.
Ren complied – like hell she was going to get shot today. She felt Kuina grab her hand, pulling her alongside the building to block the bullets.
"Does this mean the game's started?" Kuina asked.
"I don't know." Chishiya said.
"Did they give us any rules?" She asked as the group moved around to the other side of the building to think of something to keep themselves from dying.
"Without rules, this is just a massacre!"
The five of them continued around to the other side, trying to see who the shooter was and if this was actually part of the game. Ren kept her head down, trying not to freak out about what was happening around her.
"That rifle can kill from a kilometer away." Chishiya stated.
"Dammit, I recognize that found."
"Now we've got an assault rifle."
