I PUT THE guard down before he could say another word.
I felt weird enough as it was — having a different body was more dizzying than one might think — and I was in no mood to start a conversation with this man while I was basically wearing his wife's body. While he had his back turned to me, I wrapped my arms around his neck, suffocating him. He fought a little bit but I gave myself bigger muscles and stronger legs to make sure he couldn't escape.
That was a maneuver Cosmo had taught me during our first days of training with my own spin on it, of course – that being the camouflaging. My heart skipped a beat; gods, even thinking about him hurt.
I put the guard on the ground gently, noticing he had a name tag on that read Andreas. Huh, Despoina and Andreas. Cute names.
A muffled groan shook me out of my thoughts and I immediately rushed to the dirty wagon I had been carrying and helped Tempest get out. She started coughing almost instantly while also trying to take big gulps of clean air. My lips trembled as I tried to contain a snicker.
"Don't you dare," she pointed a finger at me, glaring while coughing. "Don't you dare laugh!"
I couldn't help it; I burst out laughing, throwing my head back while also taking a few steps away from her as she tried to hit me. Gods, her face. It was fucking ridiculous. Her eyes were so wide, almost resembling those of a fly as she tried to regain her breath, her cheeks a violent red colour and her clothes covered in dust from the tarp I hid her under.
I raised my hands in surrender, little laughs still escaping me, "Shutting up now,"
She ignored me she turned her back to me and focused her attention on the screens behind her that showed a live feed of the gates outside and some streets from the town outside. She had her game face on and the mood immediately turned sour.
I bit my lip and looked around for anything helpful. The whole room was small; only a small table and the five screens on the wall across from it. The rest was bare of any furniture except for another door on the wall behind the desk which led to a bathroom. My eyes landed on lots of different things inside the drawers and on top of the table; from wedding pictures to comic books to some food before they locked on the map taped on the wall behind Andreas' (I assumed) desk.
"Hey, check this out a map of the Underworld," I called for her and she immediately came to my side and studied it with me. I pointed at the closest exit I could find to the palace, "There,"
But she shook her head, "That one won't work we'll have to go through Cerberus to get there and well, that's impossible,"
I winced, "That's the three-headed dog right?"
"Yes, they represent the present, the future and the past. Kind of like saying that death is always there and that you can never run away. That's kind of his job too - to let you in but never let you out. Guess he has new orders now,"
I sucked in a breath. Thinking about this whole thing, how big it was and how I was stuck in the middle of it all even though I didn't even know any of this existed a few months ago, was terrifying. I felt small and insignificant. Until I remember the role I was supposed to play. Then, I felt scared and important in a way. And that almost made me wanna laugh.
