CHAPTER ONE
MONSTERS IN THE SILENCE───── ⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾ ⋆⁺₊⋆ ─────
THERE WAS SOMETHING inside the house and I had a feeling whatever it was, it wasn't human.
The eerie silence wasn't welcomed at all, especially in my normal-sized New York apartment where the TV was always on just so that I can have some background noise. I hated silence, I was afraid of it since I was a kid so there was no way I was the one that had closed it. Even if I had, I would have opened my computer and played some music or heck, even a podcast to drown out the silence.
Chills ran down my spine as I held my towel closer to my body, the one in my head already falling on the ground from how badly I was shaking. I had just opened the bathroom door when I heard it - nothing. At first, I hadn't even noticed it but it was when I nearly knocked something off my nightstand next to the door and the sound echoed that I froze. The air grew colder, goosebumps rising on my arms and legs.
I slowly moved away from the doorway and towards my closet across me where I threw on the first shirt and pair of shorts I found. I didn't even notice if they matched, my eyes were always on my bedroom door which was still closed, thank God. Grabbing the first thing I laid my eyes on - which turned out to be my extremely thick and heavy media and communications book from college - I slowly marched towards the door, my heart pounding in my ears making it extremely hard to focus.
I was certain I could see black spots feeling my sight just from fear and so I placed my head against the cool wall, trying to control my breathing and the shaking of my body. Because it wasn't just my hands shaking but my legs and whole torso too. I could barely take a few steps forward and the book was almost slipping from my hands.
Get it together, Embry, I screamed at myself, trying to give me a pep talk that wasn't really working, You're stronger than this. It's probably nothing anyway.
Somehow I doubted that but that didn't stop me from taking one large breath and opening the door, it slamming against the wall from the brute force I used. I cringed. Idiot, I grumbled under my breath as I slowly walked outside and looked around the small hallway. It was dark, unlike my room, and that caused a new shiver to run down my spine. Great exactly what I needed, a dark house to walk into.
Opening the lights would mean exposing myself but leaving them closed gave them an advantage. If I was going to go down, I better go down fighting. Gritting my teeth, I pressed my body on the wall opposite me and searched for the light switch that I knew was close to the opening that led to the living room/kitchen. When my fingers finally grazed it, I gripped my book and switched the lights on and that's when I heard it.
A slight roar coming from the living room. How I didn't hear it before, God only knows but when I finally did, all the colour left my face. My legs almost gave out on me. What the hell was that? I was certain no human could make a sound like that. It sounded like a wild animal, like those bulls you see in ranches right before the match started. But it couldn't be a bull so what the hell was making those noises?
Heavy footsteps neared me and my feet finally seemed to catch on, bringing me back into the safety of my room or at least, I hoped it was safe. Just as a shadow started to form in the hallway - a head with what seemed to be huge horns on top - I threw myself inside my room, locking the door behind me. I could barely breathe as I ran across the room and started pushing my desk towards the door to keep it closed.
My eyes searched around the room for my phone, all my hopes crashing down when I remembered leaving it on the kitchen counter after I returned home. Shit, what was I going to do now?
